Organic Personal Care to Be Held to Same Law as Organic Food

National Organic Standards Board Votes to Crack Down on Organic Personal Care Cheaters2009-11-06 – Organic Consumers Association

In a milestone victory resulting from years of work by the US organic community to address known fraud in the organic marketplace, the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) has voted 12 to 1 for the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) to enforce the law for organic personal care just like they do for organic food.

This would mean shampoos and other body care products that claim to be organic, but are not certified, would be forced to drop the organic claims made on their products or improve formations to meet organic standards.

Ronnie Cummins, Executive Director of the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) had this to say.

“I’m really pleased by the NOSB’s recommendation.  Brands that are using the word organic improperly should be on notice that USDA enforcement is imminent. Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan has said that she is going to get ‘tough on crime’ in the organic industry. At the NOSB meeting this week, National Organic Program director Miles McEvoy announced a ‘new age of enforcement’ in organic. I expect them to make organic cosmetics fraud a top priority. In the meantime, retailers should start cleaning up their body care aisles. Whole Foods Market, for one, was a big supporter of the NOSB recommendation.”

At the end of September, the OCA promised to announce the names of brands that have cheated consumers for years and recommend honest organic brands in order to promote certified organic personal care. As of today, the Boycott/Buycott is in effect.

Major Brands OCA Will Boycott:

Desert Essence Organics Body Care, Organics by Noah’s Naturals, Giovanni Organic Cosmetics, Nature’s Gate Organics, Amazon Organics, JASON Pure Natural and Organic, and Avalon Organic

Major Brands With USDA Organic Seal and OCA Will BUYcott, encouraging Consumers to support:

Alteya, Amrita, Baby Bear Shop, Badger Balm, Buddha Nose, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, Earth Mama and Angel Baby, Kimberly Organics, Little Angel, Mercola, Motherlove, ONEgroup, Organicare, Origins Organics, Purely Shea, Rainwater Organic Lotion, Rose Tattoo Aftercare, SoCal Cleanse, Seasons of the Soul, Sensibility Soaps/Nourish, Terressentials, Trillium Organics, Vermont Soap.

Dan Giacomini, the only NOSB member who voted against the personal care recommendations did so because he felt the board was looking at things in a limited way. He wanted to address fraud in all product sectors, such as dry cleaning and not simply personal care.

The Coming Clean Campaign has been working to clean up the natural and organic personal care industry for the past six years. To view the Certification Commitment Contract; the NOSB Recommendation or for further information on the Coming Clean Campaign, go to: http://www.organicconsumers.org/bodycare/index.cfm

In response to the fore mentioned article, published on http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_19549.cfm Trillium Organics Founder and Formulator Karen Ciesar states,

“Trillium Organics and the other companies on the BUYcott list have been taking the steps to ensure our products are verifiably Organic for many years, without much hope that the consumer could tell the difference between real and pretend organics. It’s heartening to see that organic integrity is starting to gain a legal foothold in our marketplace”.

I personally want to point out that just because some of these companies are not certified organic doesn’t mean that they aren’t natural, or aren’t better then say, Dove, Oil of Olay, Estee Lauder etc etc etc.

What this ruling means is no more trickery. If it is organic, then you will have it certified. At least in order for them to boast about it being Organic. Another way to try and halt some of the major greenwashing the goes on every second in this country.

I think this is fantastic! And well overdue. Hopefully this will make it a little bit easier for the everyday consumer to know exactly who is organic and who isn’t.

Now if we could only do something about all the greenwashing. ::cough-Clorox greenworks::

SoCal Cleanse, Start of Week 4.

**if you are reading about my 30 Day SoCal Cleanse for the first time, you may want to check out my first reviews, so you can follow along better.Detox Soap ReviewIntro to SoCal Cleanse. Start of Cleanse>week one. End of Week 2Full Cauldron: The 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse.

Well, I have to admit to a little more cheating, but all in all, I am very proud of myself.  Going out of town, I somewhat had in mind the resturants on the way I would be able to eat at.  Which I really thought would be helpful, but then we didn’t end up stopping on our way to Birmingham.  Then my choice was left to barfood.  blech. But I figured out a grilled chicken breast and a salad, was perfect!

But I am sure the cranberry and vodka wasn’t.  Or the couple few that followed.  I was smart enough to take some nuts, and fruits with me, so I didn’t get the urge to snack on chips while we were all hotel room hopping.

I should probably explain that I was in Birmingham to see the Allman Brother’s Band, and Widespread Panic.  The rest of the hotel was about 75% people doing the same thing.

I had told you in my last SoCal Cleanse review, where I was starting week 3, that the cleanse was really getting to my core with emotional healing.  That was extremely intense for about 3-4 days, then it relaxed from my mind.  It was dare I say, life changing?  yes.  i dare do say that.

Right now I am at day 24.  but I do think I am going to do an extra week.  I want to make sure I flush this past weekend from my body.  The memories are enough!  =)

I really haven’t found anything too hard to do while doing the cleanse.  The shakes are awesome, and as I told the owner, I would like to keep at doing the Protein Detox shakes, as well as the Detox Formula  on a daily basis.  Not only do I feel better, but I think it is important to realize, not matter how “clean” of a life I live, the air, water and food still have toxins in them, that I can’t avoid.

Don’t take my word for it alone, see who is supplementing their bodies with SoCal Cleanse.  Impressive!

From the hottest couture to top fitness trainers, celebrities  know the best of the best.   To keep their bodies clean, lean, and full of energy Hollywood turns to SoCal Cleanse, a healthy detoxifying and cleansing collection that focuses on the whole body, inside and out.  SoCal Cleanse is the world’s first USDA certified organic cleansing collection, which includes: washes, scrubs, soaks, teas and protein powders.

SoCal Cleanse Review, End of Week Two!

Well I have to say I really couldn’t be feeling better physically.  I am dealing with some emotional stuff that has come up, and honestly it could be making it a little worse, as that is a side effect of cleansing.  But we will never really know.

As far as cheating…. Yeah, i did a little bit, but not too bad.  I had a cookie (or 2 actually!)  and I also drank an energy drink.  Like I said, my emotions have been a little out of sorts, and it was draining me.

Part of the cleanse, is soul and mind cleansing too, and that is what I meant by the cleanse could be associated with my emotions.  I don’t think that it is 100% of the reason, but more like 30%.  When you cleanse, you really need to let go of anger, any negative feelings you might be holding onto.  It is a time to reflect, and really look into yourself and make a better person. But that can be a little scary right?  So that is what I am going to focus on the most this next week, emotional soul cleansing!

meditation_sunset_web308

The whole cleanse should really be an all over, Mind and Body Detox, and I need to start focusing on the mind!

But that part is hard to talk about on here.  I know you readers, and I would love to share it all with you, but it is the internet, and I do have to be aware of what I write and how it can affect the other people I talk about.  ME? I am an open book.  Ask me anything.  But I can’t tell you everything about my family and friends, or even about Craig with out feeling like I am disrespecting their privacy ya know?

So, my diet!  I have actually be doing really well with that.  Lots of salads, lots of herbal tea, and loads of the shakes; one every day!  I am almost out of my Protein Detox shake, (yes, it is that good!) and I need to remind myself to order more! The Protein Fiber Shake is actually not too bad either. I have started adding a little of what I have left of the Green Vibrance into them both.  Just a little added green superfood.  Being organic makes me even happier!

The schedule has been a little easier now that I am in more of a habit. I wake up, drink some warm lemon water, I make it before I go to bed.  Then I eat a piece of fruit. Apply, Orange, Banana, or this most recent few days, 3 Clementines.  They are so awesome!   I usually wait about an hour, then fix my shake.  I make it with a mixture of frozen and fresh berries, plain Kefir, and rice milk.  Some days I add a little honey, others not.

Then for lunch, I have either a bowl of Oatmeal, with honey, and a little fruit, or a side of hummus and fresh veggies.  I make the oatmeal with Rice Milk too.

If I need a snack, either hummus and veggies or peanut butter and fruit.

Dinner, has been salads and fish, or veggies and fish.

And always at least two cups of herbal tea. one at night and another mid-day.  Now that it has cooled off a lot outside, that tea is really saving me!  Usually my hunger moments are not actually hunger but boredom, or me being ancy.  So sipping on tea gives me time to sit and chill!

5227312_blog

ooohhh, the baths are so nice.  I have been really concentrating on those!  (call me spoiled!)  But I also bought some new Essential Oils, for detox, I mentioned them in my Detox Bath and Cellulite Post, and they are so refreshing.  I used to always have them all around, but when I moved here, I lost a basket of oils.  Shameful!  You might be amazed at how refreshing and uplifting Black Pepper EO is.  Even Fennel. Now they aren’t the types that you want to sniff right from the bottle but a couple of them mixed with a sweet EO, in the bath is really nice.

I have lost 4 pounds!!! I haven’t been dieting either.  If I am hungry I eat.  I just don’t eat meat, dairy, bread, sugar etc.  I even went through an entire jar of Maranatha Peanut Butter in about 5 days.

My mind feels like it is clearing.  I wouldn’t say right now it feels clear, I just feel it reaching out for more clarity.  I know that might sound a little hokey, but it is how I am feeling.  I feel the same way with my body.  I am starting to feel like I couldn’t go back to eating dairy at all.  I can’t say just yet I won’t eat bread, but I am working on that.

The SoCal Cleanse is meant to be a start to a new lifestyle, so I am treating it that, a passage way to a new way of eating and thinking.  Right now, it truly couldn’t be any better.  It is almost a magical experience. I know I know. It sounds hokey, but it is true for me.

Again, please feel free to ask me any questions about the cleanse, my experience, anything!

My 30 Day SoCal Cleanse….30 Day SoCal Cleanse Review!

September 22, 2009 by Karissa

Hey Everyone!  I hope everyone had a nice weekend, I  certainly enjoyed mine.  As some of you may have noticed I took the weekend off, and even Monday, from blogging, and from the WWW in general.  No Facebook, no emails, nothing!  It was partially my choice, but our internet did go down Friday, Craig was out of town, and instead of calling, or messing with it, I thought, “wow, mini-vaca!”

logo

I did want to keep you up to date with my SoCal Cleanse!  This is SoCal Cleanses’ deep, internal and external  toxin cleanse.  I started my 30 day program on Thursday, and so far this is the easiest Cleanse ever!  First off, I am able to eat, drink and do pretty whatever I typically do.  No dairy, and no red meat.  and you want to eat as much organically as possible.  Let me give your a recap of what my days have been like so far.  bottle-box-sm

  • A.M. wake up and have a small cup of warm water with fresh lemon juice, and an apple, banana, kiwi etc.
  • About 1 hour later, I eat either a Detox Shake, or a small bowl of organic oatmeal, I use Rice Milk, and just about a teaspoon or so of Organic Honey (tropical traditions of course!).  2 SoCal Cleanse Detox Formula Caps.
  • Lunch, nice green veggie salad.  I add chickpeas to mine to give it a nice crunch, plus fiber and protein, and a little salmon or tuna too.  The dressing I use is just Olive Oil, Lemon Juice and a dash of Mountain Rose Herbs’ Lemon Pepper Seasoning.  I try to mix in as many colors as i can, brocolli, red peppers, carrots, purple onion, fruits, healthy selection of lettuce leaves.
  • If i need it I will have a snack, either an apple dipped in Peanut Butter or some sliced veggies with hummus.
  • Dinner- I made a really great Asparagus and Cherry tomato salad, I added chickpeas to that, and it was so perfect and filling, I had that for 3 days!  But my typically dinner will be either grilled or roasted Salmon, and either brown rice and veggies or a nice salad.
  • A couple hours after dinner I drink my Detox Tea, which is surprisingly really tasty!  I was a little nervous at first, but it is GOOD!  I either have my Detox Shake or my my Hemp Protein Shake in the morning or after lunch.  Usually I have it in the mornings.
  • At some point during the day (since I work from home) I also take a nice bath.  before bathing I use the awesome SoCal Cleanse Natural fiber body brush, to gently brush my skin.  Trying to stimulate the lymph system, and get all the toxins to wake up and realize i am kicking them out!  ;-)   Then on alternating days, i use either their Detox Bath Soak or the Detox Salt Scrub.

If you have read Prissy Green before, you know i love a nice bath.  (and trust me, I don’t waste water! I don’t even let the faucet run as long as if I were in the shower!)  So i knew I would easily run out of  the Detox Bath Salts before I wanted to.  So, I have made my own, just a little Epsom, baking soda and Sea Salt, plus a couple drops of grapefruit and Peppermint Essential Oils.  (all organic except for the Baking soda and Epsom)  I will give you the full recipe later.

I did this for a couple reasons, but 1 of them being, that I wasn’t going to be able to get a good massage or any other sort of lymphatic drainage while on the So Cal Cleanse, so I really wanted to make sure I was doing the BEST at home care I could possibly do.  And one of my main concerns, is cellulite, so I knew this would help flush those toxins out too!

And I use my Bellicon Rebounder for at least 5 minutes 5 times a day.  I have also been using my treadmill, but the Bellicon is so perfect for this cleanse, as it helps to get the lymphatic system moving too!

About a week before I started the program, I had a nice long chat with Cynthia, co-owner and founder of SoCal Cleanse.  When I told her my main concerns and what I wanted to accomplish in this 30 day Cleanse, she was so delighted and excited for me!  My main concerns, are cellulite hereditary, and a PIA! Plus I want to trim down a few pounds, and also help with my acne and migraines.  I know my migraines and acne are toxic, or at least they have caused me to put even more toxic chemicals into my body, so I just know this will help with both of those, but cellulite, ack. dreadful.  I swear to you all, that I have had it since I was 14, I was fit, trim, always been skinny, but it is just in my family genes. When i talked to Cynthia about this, she told me that fat deposits hold the most toxins of your body, as they don’t have anywhere else to cling.  (And even when young girls are skinny they have those deposits started) SO when you try to lose weight, stubborn areas, like thighs, and hips hold so much of those toxins, that your body won’t let it go, because if it did, where would all of those toxins go?  SoCal Cleanse takes care of that, by cleansing you out organically and naturally, flushing out those toxins and giving them an escape route!  Plus detoxifying your liver, so that it can cleanse and purify your system more efficiently.  SoCal-Cleanse-Detoxifying-Body-Brush-closeup_1

So far I haven’t lost any weight, but I am only on halfway into day 5!  =)  I do know one thing.  My skin is so soft and smooth.  Dry Brushing has taken away all the rough skin on my elbows.  I have used scrubs, lotions and tonics, nothing ever worked!    Plus, did you know that our skin eliminates over 1 pound of toxins a day?  (so gross, I know) so dry brushing helps it to work even better, and our skin being a largest organ, needs purified as badly as anything else in our system!

Okay, so enough for the schedule, how do i feel?  I feel GREAT!  I have energy, I feel like I can relax, and think a little clearer and so far no bad effects from toxins being released.  Usually by the time dinner rolls around, I am not in the mood to cook.  Every night I look forward to it.  So easy to prepare, and guess what ?  I was even jealous of  Craig’s Ben and Jerry’s last night!  I had a tangerine and a couple strawberries!

The Shakes.  Most of the time these really aren’t the best things in the world.  But if you use SoCal’s recipes, you will find them EASY to drink and actually pretty tasty.  The Detox Shake is my favorite.  I mix a few blueberries in, and some Blueberry Kefir, a teeny dollop of honey, and it tastes like the batter for Blueberry muffins.  (really!)

The Hemp/Fiber Shake is a little more grainy, but if you can get past the texture, the taste is easy to fix!  I do the same recipe as above and although not quite as tasty, it is 100% manageable.

I think I may have to order some more of the Detox Shake, as it really came in handy when I was meeting mom for lunch on Friday.  I made a quick shake and drank it, then I really only had to worry about having a small salad or some mixed veggies at lunch.

So there is my day 5!  I will update again either later this week or early next week, as I so far this program is more then amazing!  I can’t wait to start seeing some true results!   I will try and give a review on each individual product as I continue this cleanse too!  If you have have any questions, please ask in the comments!  if I can’t answer I am sure I can get them answered for you!

SoCal Cleanse Review, Organic Charcoal Detox Soap

September 3, 2009 by Karissa

logo

At least twice a year I try to do some form of detox and or cleanse.  Usually I do a fruit and veggie only diet, for a couple days, then drink only broth for two days, then back to veggies and fruits and broth only again for 2 days.    Sometimes I will take a “cleanser” pill to help aid in the cleansing and detoxing.  My main problem has always been that it triggers bad headaches.  Even migraines. Now this could be from a number of things, waste and toxins being expelled?  or it could simply be hunger?

My mind has always told me it was hunger, but the detox and cleansing gurus I have spoken with think my toxicity is causing it.  ?? I know one thing, it doesn’t make cleansing fun!

When I say cleanse or detox to people, they almost always think of the Master Cleanse… you know the one with Lemon Juice, cayenne pepper and grade B Maple syrup. (yep did that once or thrice too)  So basically people are thinking starving, fasting and not having any energy.  It doesn’t have to be that way!

The creators of SoCal Cleanse had this new idea. :: Let’s let everyone feel good while cleansing!  And let’s offer the first USDA certified Organic  Cleanse and Detox program. :: You might remember my post from a couple weeks ago, on the SoCal Revolutionary Detox Cleanse?

Most people don’t realize that you need more nutrients when you detox, not fewer. By following the traditional idea of detoxing, you often end up doing more harm than good.

With SoCal Cleanse there’s no fasting, no juice diets, no starvation diets, and best of all, no unpleasant side effects. SoCal designed every one of their organic  products and programs to support the body’s natural detoxification process by nourishing it so it can do its job more efficiently and effectively.

Try the Peppermint of Hibiscus Organic Detox Tea

Try the Peppermint of Hibiscus Organic Detox Tea

In addition to challenging harmful detox diet protocols, they are also challenging the idea of a quick fix. The “7 Day Detox” or “Weekend Detox” will never work. We all  need to embody the idea of cleansing in your lifestyle, one small step at a time, one product at a time, one day at a time. Rething detoxing as a: “lifestyle changes that reduce the exposure of toxins while nourishing the body to improve digestion and elimination.”

SoCal Cleanse offers detox programs that teach people to cleanse their body, their minds, and their lives. From meditation to replacing your harmful personal care products with ones made with certified organic ingredients, They will walk you through how to detox as a lifestyle . Their focus is redefining detox and promoting wellness by nourishing the body, inside and out, instead of depriving it.

cleanse-and-renew-med

Basically  SoCal Cleanse is a system.  You need to eat healthy, get some exercise so your blood is flowing, and flush toxins out of your system.  Plus SoCal has some extras to make it even more effective!  Teas, Herbal Detox Formula, Cleansing Protein Mix, and a vast array of detoxifying beauty products!

SoCal Cleanse has four distinct programs, but they all run off the same concept.  Clean, natural and organic.  They are all supposed to be done in 30 days lengths, but remember this is a lifestyle right?

SoCal-Cleanse-Organic-Charcoal-Detox-Soap-Unscented-box-sm_8

So far I haven’t gotten the chance to experience any of their programs, but I have checked out their Charcoal Detox Soap.  Don’t let the dark black color scare you away!  Nestled in the plantable box, there lies a soap bar like no other! Activated charcoal is the world’s most powerful clinical absorbent. It is considered to be medicine’s most powerful absorbent and as such, it readily works to absorb many toxins and poisons, rendering them harmless.

SoCal’s Organic Charcoal Detox Soap combines the finest certified organic oils with pure activated charcoal from coconut shells, a renewable resource. The charcoal acts as a sponge, gently drawing out toxic impurities and pollution that can clog pores and cause fine lines and wrinkles, while the certified organic oils moisturize, renew, and balance your skin.

SoCal offers this soap in both Unscented and Peppermint.  I have the Unscented, and it is one of the first bars of soap, that I have used with out switching to something new…. I probably have 3-4 bars of soap being used (just by me) at any given time.  Those bars are feeling left out since I got this new black toy!  What can I say?  I love soaps, and I get bored easy!  but I always finish them all!

I love the lather the Charcoal soap easily produces, it leaves my skin clean.  My body breakouts have been getting less frequent, and the old ones heal so much faster!

So I mentioned the soap box is plantable?  Well that isn’t a mistake.  When the creators decided to bring this line out, they wanted to make it eco-friendly and zero waste. Please check out SoCal Cleanse’s Eco-Commitment. I think you will find it inspiring!

Redefining Detox
There’s a stigma when people hear detoxor “cleansing. They typically think of fasting, starvation, unpleasant side effects, and an overall unhealthy thing to do to your body. The truth is, when it comes to those specific things, we couldn’t agree more! That’s why we decided to take a stand and create a company with products that allow you to cleanse and detox your body in a healthy and safe way.

Most people don’t realize that you need more nutrients when you detox, not fewer. By following the traditional idea of detoxing, you often end up doing more harm than good.

Given what we knew we saw an extraordinary opportunity to create real change. In order for us to create the change we desired we had to pick apart the conventions one by one to find the solutions. After extensive research and development we not only found the alternatives but we’ve made them better. We’re proud to introduce SoCal Cleanse and give the best the marketplace has to offer; products that are certified organic containing the purest ingredients for both inside and out and wrapped in environmentally friendly packaging.

According to a 2002 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study, at least two-thirds of Americans live in areas where toxic chemicals in the air raise the risk of cancer. Here are some other interesting findings: In 1901, cancer was rare: 1 out of 8,000 people got cancer. Since the Industrial Revolution, the cancer rate today has risen to 1 in 3 and by the year 2009 it will be 1 in 2. [Source: The American Cancer Society]

The Consumer Product Safety Commission connects 150 chemicals commonly found in our homes to allergies, birth defects, cancer and psychological disorders.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit organization, analyzed the toxic body burden of Americans. The researchers tested for 525 toxins and found 455 different toxins in their research subjects. On average, participants  bodies contained 60 toxins that could be detrimental to the stomach or intestines, 57 that could affect the health of the reproductive system, and 52 that could affect the brain and nervous system.
