Ecorations Review and Giveaway

eco-logoI know that I am not the only person to cringe as I see trash bag after trash bag get filled with ripped wrapping paper every holiday season.  I do like to use the bags, but even those don’t last more then a couple rounds.  (typically)

Let me introduce you to Ecorations.  Fabric gift wraps and bags for your gift giving needs!  Washable, if needed, and continuously reusable.  Sizes, shapes and fabrics for any season and every gift giving need.

fabric wraps and bagsI gave my mom a purse from Handbag Heaven.  As most of you ladies know, it is nearly impossible to find wrapping paper and a box that fits something irregular like a hand bag.  But Ecorations had sent me a large Santa bag made from Organic Cotton.  It has an attractive silver ring, that allows the bag to be scrunched, and presentable.  The purse fit nicely, and had plenty of room.  No need for tissue paper!  I was going to get a picture of her opening, but it was raining the day I have it to her, and so we opened it in the car.  Not very camera friendly space or weather.  But she loved the purse and the gift bag!

Organic Santa Sack

There were 4 kids in our house growing up, and my family has always spoiled us at Christmas.  one year my mom decided it would be easier to wrap everything, then place in large decorated leaf bags.  Each with the individual kids name on them.  I think these bags would make that really special.  Especially the Organic Santa bags.  You can have them personalized!  Could be like the child’s stocking every year.  I can see it now, unwrapped presents spilling out of the top it it.  It is huge too! 22 ¾ inches tall and 13 ½ inches in diameter!

Ecorations™ was formed in May 2008 by Kathy de Jong and Debora Owens, but it’s conception stems from Kathy’s marriage and first Christmas with her new mother-in-law in 2000. A native of the Netherlands, Mrs. de Jong presented Kathy with her first gift – in a well-used, yet cherished, natural burlap tote with Santa screen printed on the front. Mrs. de Jong explained in her Dutch accent that these bags had been in the family for years, and she “needed it back”. She said with a chuckle, “you’ll see it again next year!”.

Both Kathy and Debora share a passion for travel, and in their travels noted that despite the many differences in cultures and traditions around the world, one of the most universal customs is the act of gift-giving.

It’s with this sense of global appeal, Dutch practicality and environmental conservatism that Ecorations™ was formed. Kathy enlisted the help of long-time friend and one-time co-worker, Debora Owens to work on this venture.

ReduceFootPrints Interview

November 14, 2009 by Karissa
Filed under Info You Want to Know

Hey everyone!  Sorry for the lack of posts, content and reviews this week.  I was a little under the weather and couldn’t concentrate long enough to spit a sentence out, let along 500 words.  ;)   Hopefully I will back to business as normal soon!

I do want to share someone and something with you all.  A great website for eco-friendly news, blogging and environmental ideas.  The developer is “Small Footprints” and her blog is Reduce Foot Prints which you can find at www.ReduceFootPrints.blogspot.com.badge_right_column

I think Reduce Foot Prints deserves a nomination for the Green Web Awards 2009 at Nigel’s Ecostore.  I have nominated RFP in the Eco-Blogs and News category.  I would really love it if you would take a few moments to check her site out.

She runs this great meme on Wednesdays called “Change the World Wednesdays.”  It is completely thoughtful, and better then any meme I have ever seen!

I had a chance to do a small, short interview with “Small Footprints.”

When did you start Blogging?

In July of 2008.

When and what made you be an eco-pioneer?

Well, I don’t know if I would call myself an eco-pioneer … I’m just a regular person who loves the earth.  I got pretty tired of hearing the news media tell us how dire things were, and how we needed to act “NOW”, without telling us what we could do.  Oh sure, we’ve all heard how driving a hybrid car and building an environmentally efficient house can reduce CO2 but … most of us can’t do that.  So, I set out to learn how we (normal folks from all walks of life) could help.  Reduce Footprints was actually started as a way to get people sharing information and taking both small and large steps to help the earth.

How do you research and find your information?

There are so many wonderful resources for information … the Internet, the library and, of course, word of mouth.  First, I try to find interesting, unusual ways to live “green”.  Once I’ve found something, I read everything that I can find on the subject.  This field is, at times, very controversial … the experts can’t always agree on the basics of whether or not there is a problem.  So, I try to find resources from every side … and ones that don’t have a vested interest in their beliefs.  That way, I can come up with what I believe to be the truth.   That being said, I have come back, at times, and updated a post because new information became available.  Again … it’s all about learning.

What is the biggest thing you have done personally to try and impact the planet?

Well, I practice what I preach so … I won’t ask anyone to do anything that I, myself, haven’t done or won’t do.  Writing this blog has brought about a huge shift in paradigm for my family.  We now compost and consciously reuse as much as possible, we recycle on a larger scale, we pay attention to our purchases and choose only items (and packaging) that are earth-friendly, and we have cut our energy use by more than half.

What is something non-eco that you have had a hard time letting go of?  Or the thing you have changed that was the hardest?

Long, hot showers … I now take cooler, 2-3 minute showers.  And as the weather gets cooler, it’s awfully tough not to linger and use too much water.

What are some of your favorite blogs?

That is such a hard question to answer … there are so many wonderful blogs that I try to visit regularly.  Of course, Prissy Green is right up there at the top.  J  Let me answer it this way … I follow over 400 blogs and I adore each one.  Just check out the blog roll on Reduce Footprint’s sidebar … most of my favorites are listed there.

Is your family eco-conscious?

Yes!  Everyone in my family cares about the earth and makes a conscious effort to live green.  They have also actively participated in both offering ideas for Reduce Footprints and joining the “Change The World Wednesday” challenges … a weekly event designed to raise awareness.  My family is the best!

If you could get everyone in the world to stop doing 1 thing now what would it be?

Rather than ask everyone to stop doing one thing, I’d ask them to start doing one thing … and that would be to start reducing their consumption of everything.  I’m not talking about consumption in terms of what we eat … although reducing our food intake would also be earth-friendly.  More, I’m speaking of consumption in the broader sense … the way we consume natural resources.  Our demand for stuff causes the earth a lot of heartache.  There is the drain on natural resources, the energy used to produce stuff, the waste of packaging … well, the list goes on and on.  So a very simple step that each person could take would be to just reduce the demand … reduce our consumption.

I really think you would enjoy this blog. Sure there may not be giveaways going on all day, but you can certainly learn something. And that makes a day quite worth it!  If you do find yourself liking Reduce Footprints, please take a couple moments and nominate the blog  yourself for the Green Web Awards 2009 at Nigel’s Ecostore.

Vaska Herbatergent Review and Giveaway

October 28, 2009 by Karissa

Thank you.  Thank you.  THANK. YOU.

Vaska HerbatergentFinally I feel like I have a laundry detergent herbatergent that cleans, smells good, feels good, and is 100% safe.  All I have wanted was a safe and effective laundry detergent, but it seemed to escape me, time after time.

I used to make my own. And yes, that made me feel all Mrs. Cleaver, and yet modern and green, but it was not the most natural and well, when it boiled down it, I don’t think it was that much cheaper.  I mean I am pretty much as frugalista as you can get (you can’t always tell by my reviews though, huh?).

So let me tell you about Vaska’s Herbatergent.

  • Hypo-allergenic – ideal for babies and people with sensitive skin
  • Safe on colors and all natural and synthetic washable fabrics
  • Softens fabrics naturally
  • Extends fabric life – no chemical damage, less lint
  • Reduces static electricity
  • Fresh, natural lavender fragrance (Light Lavender only)
  • 2x concentrated
  • Biodegradable
  • Graywater and septic tank safe
  • Formulated for high-efficiency (HE) and standard washers
  • Not tested on animals

Ingredients:  Plant Based Surfactants, Vegetable Conditioner, Water Soluble Degreasing Agent, Lavender Extract, Lavender Scent, Filtered Water

Herbatergent™ – A powerful botanical laundry formula that cleans without harsh chemicals. Vaska’s herbatergent uses real herbs and potent botanical cleaning agents for high performance stain removal and extreme freshness. Clothing stays brighter, lasts longer and feels softer without the chemical residues that cause skin irritation and fabric damage.

Vaska was started by Julia Fry, a fashion designer whose passion for textiles inspired her to formulate advanced botanical solutions for laundry. Vaska’s herbatergent™ uses real herbs and potent botanical cleaning agents for high performance stain removal, and extreme freshness. Clothing stays brighter, and lasts longer, and feels softer, without chemical residues that cause skin irritation and fabric damage.

Vaska’s herbatergent™ is gray water and septic tank safe. Safe for use on all natural and synthetic washable fabrics. herbatergent™ with a light lavender scent brings a garden fresh aroma to your linens.

Say hello to the true eco-friendly laundry detergent, Vaska Herbatergent!

Vaska OxygenBleachVaska HerbasoftVaska Spotoff

Plus Vaska has a non-chlorine: OxygenBleach, fabric softener: Herbasoft and a spot treater: Spotoff.

I do feel like I should mention that I don’t have kids, so I am not trying to get out tough stains generally.  BUT unlike most detergents, it got the “man head” smell out of the pillow cases, one wash.  YIPPEEE!  I know yall know what scent I am talking about?  The morning bed head smell that stinks up the male genders pillows.  (sorry babe, love ya, and know you are super clean!)

I haven’t even been adding my normal vinegar to the rinse cycle, there is no soap residue to use it on!  And sorry, but they don’t even need a fabric softener!  The herbatergent works great at that too!  Clothes smell clean, feel soft, and no static!  True test, to come later this winter, then that air is dry though!  lol

It is so gentle!  It can be used on babies items!  Effective, earth friendly and that gentle.  I am in love with Vaska!

Purchase Vaska at Amazon, Drugstore.com icon and HonestFoods. Also some select stores in the Southern California area.

So Vaska has given me 12, yes TWELVE, Vaska Herbatergents to giveaway here on Prissy Green!  I am thrilled to share such an amazing product with you!  To enter, visit the Vaska website and tell me something you learned there.

Story Jewelry Painting Giveaway (Etsy!)

October 28, 2009 by Karissa

you are my sunshineyouaremysunshine

Hi Prissy Green readers!  I’m Samantha Cummings, and Karissa has kindly let me invade her blog to tell you a little about me and to offer a prize!  You will usually find me over at Priceless Writers, creating non-fiction projects for clients…but there are a great many other things I enjoy creating.  My salvaged wood paintings are near the very top of that list!

Children love looking at whimsical, fun things – pictures, toys and even photographs.  With their little imaginations, they can turn a ladybug on a leaf into the heroine of a tale or a cupcake into a magic food made by elves that sneak around in kitchens at night. I think that’s really great, and think more adults should have that ability!

little lady bug

These paintings are done in acrylics on salvaged wood – my fiancé is a carpenter and so before he throws away the scraps from a job, I sneak out to the truck in my ninja clothes and ski-mask and confiscate them! This process looks a lot like me saying, “Honey, can you put that wood in the garage for me, por favor?”

With each painting, I try to capture something fun, whimsical or magical. They’re not only appealing to children, either…the roses seem to be a favorite among adult women.  I plan on adding many more things in the coming weeks and months – including more paintings for little boys, some beaded jewelry and other creations.  I hope you’ll visit often!

Okay back to Karissa time here at Prissy Green!  I just love Samantha’s writing and her paintings too!  So much that Samantha is sending my niece this beautiful Cupcake Painting!
cupcake

Can you see the sparkling sugar sprinkled on top? As I told Samantha, there isn’t a whole lot my niece loves more then food, but she really loves clothes, and PINK!  She gets her eating habits from me, and the fashion habits from her mom, my sister-in-law, and of course her Grandma, my mom!

Samantha has chosen this painting as a giveaway item for one of you Prissy Green readers!  To enter, head over to her shop at Etsy named Story Jewelry and pick out your favorite painting.  Or better yet, have the little one you want to win it for pick it out!

Unless you want it for yourself!  I am rather keen on the You are My Sunshine/Flower above myself! I think this would make a magical Christmas present for a little one’s room.

Cosabella Smooth Shapewear Review and Giveaway

October 22, 2009 by Karissa

gview2(2)COSABELLA, meaning “beautiful thing,” was founded in 1983 by the Italian husband & wife team of Ugo and Valeria Campello. The intimate apparel company got its start, and initial recognition, with the design of bodysuits in the mid-eighties. Now after celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2008, Cosabella is renowned for their comfortable, colorful & diverse collections that include loungewear, swimwear, beachwear, hosiery, shape wear, & new eco-friendly loungewear & lingerie.

gview(2)

The Breathe collection consists initially of seven basic shape wear pieces sized small, medium, large and extra large. Each style is designed to target specific problem areas as an everyday control wear with medium  compression.

Versatility of the fabric and styling means that each style can be adjusted to its most effective position on the body depending on the individual.

gview2-1
Cosabella transcends innerwear to outerwear by bringing fashion colors to basics. Our Shapewear is ready for this next step. Our Smooth Camisole is styled as an outerwear top and together with our Smooth thong is available in the latest fashion colors of dark violet, chocolate, pink lily, and white in addition to the basics of black and nude.  With Red, turquoise and Fuchsia to debut 11/15.

• Breathability, natural, and skin friendly.
• Permanent antibacterial and antistatic properties.
• Eco-Fordable price points.
• Protection from ultraviolet rays.
• Absorbs natural body moisture keeping the skin dry and lowering the body temperature by several degrees.
• Odor preventative (due to mineral content and ability to absorb moisture).
• Well being fabric makes the wearer feel cool and super comfortable.

I was able to give the Smooth Thong a try.  I should first say, I am not a real big fan of thongs.  (i feel like I have wedgy.  lol.)  But the Smooth Thong fits so well, and doesn’t move around like a typical thong, so I didn’t have that problem.  It was actually really comfortable.  Most shape wear has so much elastic and so much artificial, man made material that they cause me to sweat, then get really cold.  I didn’t that issue here.  The Breathe Collection is made from 67% Bamboo, so it allows your skin to breathe, a huge bonus from all other shapewear.  Breathable Shapewear!  Plus eco-friendly, we found a winner!

Cosabella did supply me with the Smooth thong to try out, although the didn’t sway my personal opinion.  Cosabella is also offering one Prissy Green Reader the chance to win a Smooth Camisole and Smooth Thong for themselves!  a $102 value!

To enter, look around their Smooth Shapewear, or look around their Eco Category and tell me something you would like to try out and why.  Please don’t use the Smooth Camisole or the Smooth Thong, go for something else.

Seventh Generation needs your help making our nation’s outdated chemical law tougher, in order to make the world safer for our children. Join us in spreading the word about the Million Baby Crawl to help educate and empower parents to raise their voices for stronger standards on toxic chemicals.

Jeffrey Hollender co-founder of Seventh Generation had this to say,

We assume our homes are safe havens, but the fact is that the vast majority of the chemical compounds found in the products we use there have never been tested. And in most cases manufacturers don’t even have to tell us on product labels what those toxins are.

This is a dangerous recipe for harm that virtually every family is exposed to every day,” said Seventh Generation co-founder and Chief Inspired Protagonist, Jeffrey Hollender. “We’re on a mission to come together and change that once and for all.”

Did you know that…

  • In the 33 years since Congress passed that nation’s chemical regulatory law, the Toxic Substances Control Act (TCSA), the Environmental Protection Agency has required testing on just 200 of the more than 80,000 chemical compounds developed for products used in the home.
  • Under the current law, the EPA does not have the authority to demand the information it needs to evaluate a chemical’s risk, and neither manufacturers nor the EPA are required to prove a chemical’s safety as a condition of use.
  • 1.25 million kids younger than six are unintentionally poisoned in the home each year by things like cosmetics and personal care products, cleaning substances, pain relievers and cough and cold medicines (American Association of Poison Control Centers)
  • Studies show that nearly 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants have been found in the umbilical cord blood of newborns (EWG).

So what can you do?  I ask the same thing.

To help turn this new bill into law, Seventh Generation has partnered with Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, a diverse nationwide coalition comprised of environmental groups, health professionals and others working to pass smart federal policies that protect us from toxic chemicals.

  • Join the Million Baby Crawl and email a friend!
  • Learn more about Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families and email Congress to let them know you think it’s time to update the law governing toxic chemicals. www.saferchemicals.org
  • Learn more about safe products with Seventh Generation’s Label Reading Guide.
  • Join the Twitter Party for Million Baby Crawl.  Hashtag #MBCrawl. Date TBD, but I promise you will know one panelist!  **me!**  And as soon as I know the date, I will let you all know.

Andy Igrejas of the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families coalition had this to say:
It’s time for commonsense limits on toxic chemicals in our homes, workplaces, and in the products we use.” “We must act together to see that the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act is passed and families are protected from unsafe products. The Million Baby Crawl will take much more than baby steps toward making these things happen.”

In order to spread the word about this new campaign, Seventh Generation is providing one winner with a Seventh Generation starter kit.  To enter to win, please visit the Million Baby Crawl and tell me something unique you learned there.
