Extraordinary Measures and $10,000!

December 18, 2009 by Karissa

CBS Films’ upcoming film Extraordinary Measures, starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser, is inspired by the true story of John Crowley – a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds to pursue a cure for his children’s life threatening disease.

To celebrate Crowley’s story, we’ve created a wonderful opportunity to get the word about a cause that is close to you, and also possibly win some money for them!

It’s so easy, all you have to do is upload an inspirational video.

Some fantastic videos have been uploaded to the Inspirational Quilt and are already in the running for the $10,000 donation- including the story of Alexandra “Alex” Scott, a young cancer patient who, facing a grim diagnosis, insisted on setting up a lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer before succumbing to the disease at age eight. Her stand evolved into a national lemonade stand initiative and foundation which has since raised over $25 million for the cause.

The quilt can be found here: http://youcastcorp.com/c/67/go/index.php?r=1

Other videos highlight a mountaineer with Multiple Sclerosis who encourages and inspires other MS patients to find their own “mountains” to conquer, an inner city childrens’ center in Harlem, and two women who joined forces to build a playground equipped for special needs children.

This is a fantastic opportunity for ANY charity (big or small) to get the word out about a cause and possibly win some money!

Again, this is to celebrate the release of Extraordinary Measures starring Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford. Its tagline, “Don’t Hope For a Miracle. Make One,” is inspired by the film’s real-life subject, John Crowley, a father who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family’s future to pursue a cure for his children’s life- threatening disease.

* NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Participants must be legal residents of 1 of the 50 US states or D.C., at least 18 years old or age of majority in state of residence or older at date of entry. Entries accepted until January 26, 2010. Void where prohibited by law.

Childrens Orchard, Win a $100 Gift Card

December 10, 2009 by Karissa

This season, Children’s Orchard resale stores will give away a $100.00 gift card to one lucky mom. As you can imagine, $100 goes a long way in resale — equivalent to $1,000 at a traditional department store. To be eligible for the giveaway, moms should go to the Children’s Orchard website and join the Children’s Orchard M.O.M.S. Club before December 21, 2009. All new M.O.M.S Club members automatically receive a $5.00 Cache Card via email and will receive regular notifications of special promotions at Children’s Orchard.

RESALE SHOPPING TIPS FROM CHILDREN’S ORCHARD

  • When shopping at thrift or consignment stores, make sure you inspect clothing for holes and stains. Upscale resale stores are very selective about the products they take in and will typically use a special light to check clothing for imperfections. Ask about the store’s inspection process to be certain.

  • Bring a current department store catalog with you to the resale or thrift store to make sure you buy only the latest fashions. Most upscale resale stores receive new inventory daily so you should be able to find current styles in some of the leading brands, like Ralph Lauren, GAP and Calvin Klein.
  • To get the best deals, look for special events and offers. In addition to the already deeply discounted prices, resale stores often have generous promotions during the holiday season. Be sure to check your local resale store for loyalty programs to receive member-only offers.
  • When looking to buy children’s toys and accessories such as strollers and high chairs, talk to the store owner about how they stay up-to-date on recalls. Since most items at resale stores do not come with their original packaging, it is up to the consumer to make sure they are not purchasing faulty equipment.
  • Don’t pass up the opportunity for some extra cash this Holiday season by selling your kids’ gently-used clothing, toys, furniture, and accessories. Call ahead for information on what your local resale store is buying.  Some stores will set up a one-on-one appointment with the buyer and others allow you to walk in at your convenience to sell your outgrown kid’s stuff.

Contest is not on Prissy Green, please go to Children’s Orchard website and join the Children’s Orchard M.O.M.S. Club before December 21, 2009!

Mountain Rose Herbs Offers Cash Incentives for Carpooling & Biking to Work

December 9, 2009 by Karissa

Mountain Rose Herbs, the premier provider of competitively priced, sustainably-harvested organic herbal products, is taking their eco-efforts to new heights by introducing the nation’s most progressive carpooling and bicycling to work program that features cash incentives.Carpool

“We pay our employees in cash for carpooling and bicycling to work. To our knowledge, no other company is offering a cash incentive that reaches the same caliber as ours in the United States,” says Shawn Donnille, Mountain Rose Herbs’ Operations Manager & Director of Quality Control.

A huge concern to environmentalists, excess automobile usage is a primary contributor to global warming. In fact, according to the Environmental Defense Fund, U.S. autos emit more than 333 million tons of carbon dioxide each year, more than one-fifth of the nation’s total carbon dioxide emissions. Carpooling and bicycling programs–like the one introduced by Mountain Rose Herbs–can make a big difference in lessening our environmental footprint.

The program pays staff members who carpool to work 12-cents per mile for each passenger, and for those who bicycle to work, 20-cents per mile. In addition to the cash reward for each mile, Mountain Rose Herbs also offers a yearly $500 cash bonus to the staff member who has logged the most miles.

The carpool and bicycling to work incentive is just one program in a long line of forward-thinking sustainability programs from Mountain Rose Herbs. As a “Zero Waste” company, Mountain Rose Herbs goes to great lengths to ensure that materials which might be regarded as waste are recycled, re-used, composted, reclaimed, or brought back into the production cycle. When Mountain Rose Herbs adopted a “Zero Waste” policy, they went from producing about 3,300 gallons of waste per month (a normal amount for a processor) to producing between 80 to 100 gallons per month–the same as a typical four-person household. All invoices, flyers, brochures, and other paper materials are printed on 100-percent post consumer materials and all facilities are powered by renewable energy.

Because of Mountain Rose Herb’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, they have received numerous awards, including Co-op America’s People’s Choice Award for Green Business of the Year, Provender Alliance’s “The Evolution in Motion Award” and the “Bold Steps Towards Sustainability Award.”
Since 1987, Mountain Rose Herbs, based in Eugene, Oregon, has been known for its uncompromising commitment to organic agriculture, sustainable business practices, and steadfast focus on the pure aesthetics and freshness of botanical products. Their wide range of product offerings includes bulk herbs and spices, aromatherapy and essential oils, tea and tea supplies, and natural health and body care. Every aspect of product creation is carried out in accordance to strict quality control and organic handling procedures by employees who care. From their fragrant and beyond-fresh organic herbs and spices, to soothing essential oils and delicious herbal teas, the quality and integrity of Mountain Rose Herbs is unparalleled–with smiles guaranteed.

Mountain Rose Herbs has been my go to shop for clays for making masks since 1992. No internet at the time, so placed my orders via telephone. Times have certainly changed!
Great spot to order teas and tea supplies for the hard to buy for tea drinking this holiday season!

Phthalates, ADHD and Our Children

December 7, 2009 by Karissa

PHTHALATES IN CONSUMER PRODUCTS LINKED TO ADHD

Biological Psychiatry, published a recent study conducted by the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Seoul National University College of Medicine and Institute of Environmental Medicine investigating the impact of phthalates on symptoms of Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in school-age children. Phthalates were directly linked to the severity of ADHD symptoms.

After measuring the urine phthalate concentrations and evaluating ADHD symptoms in 261 Korean children, ages 8-11 the study found the higher the levels of phthalates in the urine, the worse the ADHD symptoms were in the children.  Other studies have also linked phthalates to hormone disruptions, birth defects such as hypospadias, asthma and reproductive problems. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists phthalates as water and air pollutants.

Phthalates, chemical plasticizers added to plastics to make them soft and pliable and solvents added to cosmetics, are found in nail polish, shampoo, lotions, food and beverage packaging, toys, medical devices, cosmetics, shower curtains and various other materials.

In August 2008, Congress passed legislation to ban the use of the following phthalates; DEHP, DBP and BBP in toys marketed to children under the age of 12.  However phthalates continue to be included in other products including cosmetics and medical devices which are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the FDA website, at the present time, FDA does not have compelling evidence that phthalates, as used in cosmetics, pose a safety risk.  The FDA’s stance is based on the findings of BPA studies primarily funded by manufacturers, three of which were funded by the American Chemistry Council.  The FDA has come under scrutiny due to their rejection of research funded by the National Institutes of Health and the fact that their findings contradicted more than 100 studies done by independent researchers.  Under pressure to re-evaluate its position, the FDA plans for further testing.

In the meantime, consumers looking to limit their family’s exposure to this controversial chemical can start “by being a smart consumer.  Purchase and eat organic fresh foods, buy toys and personal care that specifically indicate being phthalate free. Purchase certified organic personal care (never includes fragrances which can contain phthalates).  Look for food and personal care packaged in safer plastics such as PETE (#1 recycle icon).  Never use plastic containers or plastic wrap when warming food in the microwave.  Increase ventilation in the home. Consumers can also check out product safety levels on sites such as www.healthystuff.org , www.healthychildhealthyworld.org and www.cosmeticdatabase.org ” states Trillium Organics Founder and Formulator Karen Ciesar.
