Should You Go Organic?

Here’s evidence that organic foods are worth the pricier price tag:
Kids who ate pesticide-free foods had levels of organophosphates six times lower than those on conventional diets, University of Washington researchers have found.
Organophosphates are chemicals linked to neurological damage, leukemia, and other cancers
The study was a comparison of 24-hour urine samples from 18 kids, ages 2 to 5, who ate a diet of 75 percent organic foods and 21 kids eating the regular stuff. They measured breakdown products from organophosphates (OP pesticides), which are among the most common agricultural pesticides in the US. (hello developmental defects)
Because organic foods can make your grocery bill higher, try opting first for organic versions of foods highest in pesticides:
- apples
- apricots
- bell peppers
- cantaloupe
- celery
- cherries
- cucumbers
- imported grapes
- green beans
- peaches
- spinach
- tomatoes
Try using frozen varieties when you can. They have more nutritional value then the produce at the store. Because they are flash frozen the nutrition is not compromised. Just don’t microwave them in the plastic bags they come in. Even if it tells you that you can.

Great post. my family has has been very successful in transitioning to organics over the past few years. We haven’t gone completely organic yet, but we will. It’s just as you wrote, it can get expensive, so I especially like your money saving comment about the frozen produce!
Thanks again.

Organic is so important and I do not think that the majority of the public realizes this. So many studies are hidden or sponsored by big ag and it really scares me. You pay for what you get is all I have to say.
Even though it is expensive to buy organic food, you are saving money in the long run in that you are going to avoid disease and high medical costs. You will feel better. More and more people are going organic even in the “recession.” Thanks for the post..very useful and timely!

Though I don’t have kids and are not planning on any, I’m glad I made the switch years ago. Children are much more vulnerable and I do feel the effects of not having an optimal diet while growing up. Its not too late to start for yourself though!
