Toshiba Laptop Dead in less then 10 months…

augh augh augh!toshiba satellite laptop

So I found out what MIGHT be wrong with my precious Toshiba laptop.  I took it to a computer shop near me, and they guy was like, ” I can fix it, but I won’t.”

Let me explain really quick what the issue is.  First know that my computer is less then 10 months old.  My screen goes black, then comes back.  It never actually shuts off, just the backlight goes out for a second, then comes back.  Well it has progressively been getting worse, and if I use it for too long it will go out, until I have to hold the screen a certain way, and keep holding it to view the screen.  Think foil and antennae.   Pretty hard to type with 1 hand!  But it is killing me!

So back to nice man telling me for free that he won’t fix it.

I say, “oh sweet.  can you tell me why?”  So I understand now why he doesnt’ want to.  Basically it is $50 an hour labor, and he said it would take at least 4 hours, and because the backlight wire either needs replaced or soudered back he wouldn’t be able to guarantee the work.

So I call Toshiba….They tell me it will be $425.  holy christ wagons, Iad29d1659e1eea9e could buy a new lap top for just a little more then that! Now mind you, I don’t use my laptop for downloading music, I use it for documents, writing, and photos for Prissy Green only.  Oh, and watching movies via hulu.com.

I haven’t been rough with it.  I don’t take it on trips. It stays on a table in our living room.  So the fact that a difficult piece to fix needs fixed kinda ticks me off.  I repeat, it is less then 10 months old!

So right now I am waiting to hear back from the nearest Authorized Toshiba Repair shop…. I am hoping if I smile pretty enough they will give me a discount.  It is just too close to Craig’s Birthday and Christmas to drop a couple to a few hundred.  It would have to wait until next year.  and that will make me cry.

So send some Laptop love to my Toshiba Satellite.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is a decent price!~

thanks Betty! I don’t have an extra monitor, but that is a great idea.

no phone call back from the repair people. I probably shouldn’t have left a message stating what was wrong. they probably don’t want to fix it either!

I’m sending you good luck laptop vibes because it is frustrating when things don’t work right (or at all). I had someone solder the power adapter connection on my old laptop. It cost $50. Sometimes, you can find computer wizards who charge less.

I currently have an HP laptop and in less than four months of owning it, the DVD drive does not open anything. The green light comes on, but will not open any DVD. This is a brand new laptop and I luckily have super-duper protection for the computer, but haven’t gotten around to seeing what’s up with the drive because Customer Service leaves me on the phone too long.

I’d also like to add that I can’t stand Vista.

Do you have an unused monitor in the house? when your screen is visible, change your settings to 2 screens and move all your active items to the second screen. If and when the laptop blacks out, the other screen will be visible and you will be able to get on with your computer life.
It isn’t hard to configure and it doesn’t cost anything assuming you have a monitor … or a friend to lend you their spare.

Oh wow – that is terrible! I have a Toshiba too, I bought it about 3 years ago – I love it. I am noticing that it gets super hot though. I don’t want anything to happen to it – I really love it.

I agree, if this guy can’t fix it, though the timing is bad, it would be almost the same price to get a new one!

    Good luck!

Awwwwww…so sorry about your laptop. I’m sending good thoughts your way. I also have a Toshiba, and knock on wood, it has been good to me for two years. $50/hour @ 4 hours? Ouch! Makes you want to go into the computer repair business!
Good luck…..post when you find out more,
    Brigitte

Oh no! I am so sorry! That really stinks. I have Toshiba TVs, but no computers. I’ve had good luck with them so far, but neither of them are very old.

Best of luck to you on getting it fixed cheaply!

I had a Toshiba too. It died within 14 months. It was going to cost lots to fix mine too. The hard drive just died. Good thing I had saved my info. I bought a new laptop. Getaway for $420 tax in. I love it and it works fast.

    Good luck with yours.
