Amber Jewelry (.com) Review and Giveaway

I know one thing about Amber Jewelry, it was my first true love.  Forget those boys of high school. There was a shop near my house, that I started buying REAL jewelry at, when I was about 16, and he handmade gorgeous rings, and my eyes always fell back to each and every Amber one he created. Then I started driving to the “artsy” section of town, and realized I could buy earrings, and necklaces, and pendants! My love was officially signed, sealed and delivered from that moment on!

I am not sure if it is the color or the magic of the fossilized resin, but it draws me. Take me to a shop with Amber anywhere, and that is where my feet take me. Amber can come in a variety of colors, from pale yellow, the burnt orange typically seen, to cherry red, green and even blue!

Isn’t that fascinating?

Amber, an organic plastic, has the unique & singular ability to encompass and preserve the organic materials it encounters, like the the proverbial fly trapped in honey. Baltic amber is approximately 40-60 million years old and was held dear by many ancient cultures, treasured both for protective & decorative qualities. In modern western times, the movie Jurassic Park caused a surge of popular interest in this gemstone. However, amber has long commanded the hearts and minds of humans–in fact, it has commanded whole economies.

992265-2TInside the plant material and insects it has encapsulated, strands of DNA–life’s basic code–are also captured. This is why amber is often referred to as a, “Window to the Past.”

Common inclusions are plant materials such as oak leaf remnants or tiny hairs from oak buds, pollens, spores, leaves, twigs and most famously of all–insects. At least 214 plant species have been identified through morphological analysis of amber. The scientific study of amber has yielded a bounty of priceless data about the ancient world which but for the golden fist of amber’s preservation would have been lost to the ages.

Amber is not, as is commonly thought, pine sap, but rather amber is the vascular 755914-2Ttissue of the trees, exuded either during either injury or radical climate change.

Amber is to Europe what the Silk Road was to China- it was one of the reasons Emperor Nero opened up the trade & communication hubs along The Amber Way. Amber is a deeply storied substance that has touched many lives & many cultures. It is a very human history, a beloved adornment, a geologic wonder, a scientific odyssey, a cultural expedition & even at times, a mystical pursuit.

Amberjewelry.com is a family owned shop & the only retail company itself in the United States to be a certified member of the International Amber Association. Please visit us online, or in person at our shop & art gallery, where you may experience the wonderful array of genuine, authentic Baltic amber jewelry we carry, created by artisans from all over the Baltic region. We specialize in expressive sterling silver & amber jewelry.

AmberJewelry.com was so very generous is letting me select a piece of jewelry to review here on Prissy Green.  I selected the Rainbow Dangle Earrings, the first picture on top of this posting.  These earring not only match anything and everything I wear, but are such a conversation piece.  One of my friends tried to buy them from me!  ” told her hell no!  Go visit AmberJewelry.com!“  Until I got these, I had been pretty good about changing my earrings out for different outfits, but since I got these beautiful dangles, they might as well be only pair of earrings! The capture light, and the gradation of the colors of each gem, is perfection!

The silver that binds them, moves freely, so that they bend and move, but so that the amber is always together.  Something truly unique!  Each earring has 14 individual pieces of Amber!

One extremely lucky reader is going to have their choice between the three items above! Brigid’s Fire Celtic Amber Set (normally $93.50, on sale for $63.50), Brilliance Cognac & Crystal Pendant ($89) and the item I reviewed, the Amber Rainbow Dangles ($77.50).

To enter, go to this section at Amber Jewelry and tell me something you learned about Amber.

Amber oil permeates the skin very fast, penetrating deep into the tissue and exerting a positive influence, leading to the introduction of the majority of negative ions. It improves blood circulation and eases muscle pains.

I enjoyed reading about green amber: Natural green amber is a mix of clear amber and a pale greenish-yellow tone. Generally it contains many, many inclusions of plant and earth hubris. These inclusions are large and the amber is beautiful and unusual. This type of amber is sometimes referred to as earth amber. It contains sediments and veritable gardens of organic materials.

About 5 years ago I met a woman who had a stunning necklace. She commented on how the color changed depending upon the light. I didn’t know until reading this that what she has was amber!

    Origins of Baltic Amber
About 45 million years ago, the territory of present central and northern Europe known as Fennoscandia was covered by a thick “amber forest” stretching from the Norwegian Coast to the Caspian Sea before the landmass separated into what we know as present day Europe.

The British Natural History Museum recently discovered that a fly preserved in amber thought to be one of the oldest known examples of this particular species was in fact a fake and probably no more than 150 years old. (More of this fly later). Evidence of this nature, that even the best can be fooled should alert all collectors to the possibility of being misled or simply cheated.

I knew that amber could contain small insects, but I never knew about some of its other properties that could have made it seem magical to ancient peoples. According to the Andzia’s Amber website, amber electrifies and attracts small piece of paper when rubbed, and it sinks in fresh water but floats on the surface in saltwater. That’s amazing. I love amber jewelry! After reading your post about Andzia’s amber jewelry, it reminded me that I had a set of amber that belonged to my mother, so I went to dig it out. A necklace/earring set – the earrings are really pretty but the necklace reminds me of something Wilma Flintstone would wear; huge chunks of amber strung together on gold wire links….very Wilma-like! I’ve never worn it but just slipped it on to see if it influences my frame of mind in a positive way ( as they stated on their website)!

These are among the factors which make amber such a highly desirable and valued raw material in the folk art and jewellery trades.

Although I learned far more than I’m posting here, a few things interesting facts I learned: Amber is one of the few precious substances on earth we consider a gem which is not of mineral origin. Diamonds, jet (both derived from various stages of coal) and amber are the only gems of vegetative origin. I also read about the therapeutic and bactericidal benefits of succinic acid (obtained by heating amber in a vacuum) and how it is used in pharmaceuticals and anti-aging products. And, that Baltic amber contains 3-8% of succinic acid, and the amount of succinic contained in amber determines its quality. Baltic amber contains the highest level of succinic acid, thus Baltic amber is the most highly valued form of amber:)

As ages ago, amber is still perceived as an exceptional stone, as it smells nicely when warmed in your hand, gives out a resinous scent and aromatic smoke when burnt, electrifies and attracts small piece of paper when rubbed, sinks in fresh water but floats on the surface in saltwater, contains inclusions (traces of life dating back 40 million years ago).
