Acne Fight Fix Up Update: Start of Week Two
September 15, 2009 by Karissa

Augh, I started breaking out over the weekend. Like the super charged icky ones. One ginormous one on my nose, that hurt like hell, now I have one like that on my chin. And I had one on my forehead and one above my temple- both of those were just sorta oozy, not painful, just scabby at first sight. gross.
I have also had quite a few “clogged” pores, then once they are cleared, no biggie, life returns to normal. Seems like this treatment really heals ALL of the acne pretty quickly once it surfaces, which is fantastic. I mean the one on my nose was horrid. Sunday I was almost afraid to go to lunch because of it, but today, you can hardly see it.
I think I am going to start using my Alaska Glacial Co. Mask once a week (maybe twice) and the Carley’s Mask for Acne Prone Skin once a week. It is VERY heavy, full of good ingredients, but not enough clay, and I think for now my skin is getting plenty of moisture! Although the ingredients are great for my skin, I think it is causing my skin to react. Afterall one day I am using 10% Benzoyl Peroxide every night with nothing underneath it, nothing on top. And 10% during the day with Sunscreen on top, and now, I am using moisturizers and “replenishers”, and soothers? My skin is freakin out a little!
I am pretty thrilled that my face is not showing any major adverse reactions. I do have to be really really careful to not get any of the Acne Treatment
anywhere close to my eyes. Some products don’t effect my eyes and others do. This does. I learned the hard way. Now I actually put a little jojoba oil on them before I do the treatment, and then wash it off with the soap after wards. it works great.
Oh, and I so love the Carley’s Natural Soap
! I have been using it consistently as my body soap, and my shampoo most days. (except for review days) and wow, super creamy, unscented just a nice clean scent. YUM!
These pics don’t really show anything all that well, I have tinted moisturizer on, they actually make me look like I have pretty good skin! I wish the real life world saw me through a photo! =) The marks you can see really is acne, they sorta look more like discoloration, which some of it is.
Carley’s really has been helping my acne go away faster, the question is, will it stop the acne from forming? ah, the million dollar question!
And just a reminder, I am not being paid, or compensated for my review. I struggle with acne, and I know some of you do too. I have tried so many products and I felt it was time to share my stories with you. If this works, great! If not, I will move on to the next
test of products and keep this going!

Simply Organic Review and Giveaway
Simply Organic is a family owner and run business that supplies it’s plant based hair care, skin care, bath & body and lifestyle accessories to some of the finest salons, boutiques, hotels and spas around the world! The are based and created out of Spring Park, Minnesota. (I love Minnesota!) Each product seems to have Olive Leaf Leaf Extract in it, and their label has a photo of the Olive tree, stating “The Tree of Life.”

Simply Organics Mission is to to share with their clients new ways to incorporate healthier choices into their everyday lives. They are consistently striving to research and develop the safest, highest quality products available while introducing unparalleled wellness information to the professional salon and spa community. All of their products are certifies organic.
Simply Organics main focus is hair care, and after sampling thier Everyday Hair & Scalp Wash and Everyday Hair & Scalp Rinse I know why!
It is gentle, I can use it all the way down to my ends (which for black and blue reasons is important right now). It is a remarkable shampoo for every other day use, and my hair is illustrious and shiny even on that second day! Truth be told, it is even shiny (not from oil) on the third day before I hope in the shower. I can tell it has been giving some life and strength back to my hair, plus it gives added protection even before applying conditioner. It smells delicious, like a a vanilla wafer dipped in lemon pie. Plus being certified organic isn’t too shabby either right?
So I have been following that up with a dose of their Everyday Hair & Scalp Rinse. I think it is far to often that women don’t nourish their scalps. I apply a natural oil to my scalp at least one night a week, and let it soak in over night, and when i condition, I apply a little to my roots too, close the cuticle baby! The conditioner is responsible for replacing any essential oils that might be lost in washing your hair. So important. Plus, any moisture that might be lost on your scalp, after all the scalp is skin, and you always moisturize your skin right? It also aides in protecting and strengthening. I can feel it working, love the avocado oil in it. Normally if I were to pick out my own conditioner, I always go for the heavy hitters. But this was actually spot on for my hair right now. There is so much added weight to my ends with the crappy color, that my hair is weighed down. This conditioner is effective, but yet light weight, plus it smells like oranges.
A few days ago I told you that I had stopped using body washes altogether, for a couple of reasons, one was the waste, I don’t need an extra bottle being thrown in the recycling bin, but two, I love handmade bar soap! I would take a picture of how many I am using, or rather how many I have opened right now, but it is embarrassing! After using Simply Organics Everyday Moisurizing Body Wash those bar soaps are getting a new partner in the rotation game! Great “latherablity” (nice word) and leaves my skin nice and balanced. A little pricey for my pocket book at $34 for 16.5 oz. It did win a 2009 Natural Solutions, Beauty with a Conscience Award though, so that tells you how good it is! They do have Shea Bar soap, but I haven’t gotten a chance to try it out.
The Everyday Moisturizing Body Lotion. I use a lot of oils at night to keep my dry skin hydrated, but during the day, I want something less greasy! This is deep moisture, with out the heaviness and greasiness. Made with olive oil, shea butter and safflower oil it is great that they were able to keep it that way!
I have TWO prizes to giveaway. Each will receive an Amenity Gift Set which is a great way to try all the products listed above plus the Lavender bar soap, you will receive:
Everyday Hair & Scalp Wash (2 oz)
Everyday Hair & Scalp Rinse (2 oz)
Everyday Moisturizing Body Wash (2 oz)
Everyday Moisturizing Body Lotion (2 oz)
Oatmeal Lavender Bar Soap .75oz
Simply Organic Lip Balm (0.15 oz)
To purchase all the items in this kit, it would cost $47! You can purchase this kit for only $25.75! To enter, head on over to the Simply Organic Beauty Website, and browse around, and pick out an item or more! (something not reviewed here!) and come back here and tell me what item you most like to try and why. You must do this correctly, you can’t just say I want to try one of their shampoos, that doesn’t count.

Who Cooks? and Food for 5
September 14, 2009 by Karissa
Filed under Recipes: Home, Skin, Food
Not sure if I have made you aware but Craig and I love to eat. But we really never eat anything just regular. We like it funktified! Sorry vegetarians close your ears for a second. When Craig went to buy a grill after he moved to Indiana, he bought one that had a smoker attachment. It is really nice. He is out there nearly every weekend smoking something.
The problem for me, is that I am a veggie girl. I can eat a whole pile of veggies, and that be my dinner. The oil they were cooked in is my fat and I am happy and content. or heck, I can have a bowl of soup or even a bowl of cereal! Craig doesn’t feel complete unless he has had a big ol hunk of meat.
So that is when we figured out who would cook dinner! HA! And that is when we realized that Craig would start experimenting in the kitchen. I had to poke fun at him a couple times because he would never alter the recipes. If a recipes asks to two limes, and he adds two limes, but say his are the size of toe grapefruits, and everything tastes weird, and I ask, he will say, “well the recipe said two limes” he turns all 3 years old on me. lol
He is getting better….
This was one of his first recipes, and probably one his best. You do need to head over to my friend Cat’s new blog, Food for 5, to check it out, as I posted it there.

ecoTOOLS Bath and Body Line Review and Giveaway
Last month I told you about ecoTools new Bath and Body line. Well now I am here to tell you even more!
The entire Bath and Body line from ecoTools is 98% Natural, paraben, phthalate and cruelty free. Comes in a recyclable bottle, biodegradable ingredients, plus all the products have been dermatologist, allergy and clinically tested. They really did their homework!
I have become a pretty avid bar soap crazed girl. Haven’t been using many gels or shower creams at all. Occasional for reviews, but I always end up swamping back to the trusty, hand-crafted, old-school soap bars. Well I may be gel’in a little more often. Clean Skin Cleaner World ($7.99) is soft and smooth, has a great lather, and washes off really clean. I don’t like when I feel like I still have a cleanser on after I shower. Yet does leave a bit of moisture too, wish it great.
After sudsing up with Cleaner Skin Cleaner World, I was able to soften up with Sustainable Softness ($3.99). Made with nourishing Shea Butter, aloe, sunflower seed oil and jojoba seed oil this “lotion” actually works more like a cream. It absorbs into the skins very quickly, yet leaves a great barrier of protection. I think it will be great on dry skin in the winter time.
Last in what I reviewed is the Blooming Planet Fresh Floral Body Spray ($7.99). This was a disappointment. All the products have fragrance to them, but they actually smell, light and a bit tropical. This is just far to floral for my nose. I know plenty of ladies who like florals, I am just not one of them. I am unsure as to why they just didn’t stick with the same fragrance for the whole line. If you are a floral scent person, you will probably like it. It isn’t that the floral it’s self is bad, I have always had headache issues with them.

The rest of the line consists of Love Heels All (intensive heel cream $7.99), One Hand Helps Others (intensive hand cream $7.99), Replenish Your Natural Resources (body butter).
They also have three extremely cute gift sets: ALL FOUR THE CAUSE hand & foot care set , GREEN, CLEAN, GO travel set ($9.99) and a BE GREEN, LIVE CLEAN body care set ($14.99). The entire line is available at Walgreen stores nationwide, and at their incredible prices, who wouldn’t pick some up!?
I have two sets of products to giveaway! Each winner with receive one of the following.
Clean Skin Cleaner World, Sustainable Softness and a Blooming Planet. All full sizes.
To enter got to 1% for the Planet and tell me a useful fact you learned there. ecoTools Participates, that is why it is relevant.

Sweet Dreams Collection By The Happy Company- Review
Ever since I was a small child I have had a hard time falling asleep. I remember reading in a book that their was an old wives tale that if you put a pot of water under your bed, it would help you drift to sleep faster. So here I am, 10 years old, putting a pot of water under my bed! It didn’t work. Nothing does. Not Ambien, benedryl, liquor =) NOTHING.
I was sent the Dream Mask ($8) from the Sweet Dreams Collection from The Happy Times Company for Review. Now I am not going to lie and say I have had a perfect nights sleep ever since! That isn’t true at all! But I will say, that the first night was pretty awesome! I think a problem I had, and never realized it was light. I can’t have ANY light, not a TV, not a small crack from the door to an outside room nothing. Well this mask takes care of that! Layered with fluffy-as-a-cloud batting, light blocking material, and lavender to give you ideal coverage with the benefits of aromatherapy. It actually applies slight pressure where you want it, and is gentle right where you want it.
It is so soft against my delicate eye skin. So soft. my only product suggestion? Make it out of that Aloe material that some sock manufactures use, that are supposed to add moisture to your feet when you wear them? My eyes get so dry overnight! The isn’t a complaint, just a suggestion!
The lavender scent is mild, which is great. I don’t like heavy scents at night.
I really thought having something over my eyes would bother me. And that is why I have never previously purchased one. But to be honest, once I had it on, I felt more relaxed. It was almost comforting? I guess to some degree how we swaddle babies and it comforts them this eye mask comfort
ed me.
I have had some better nights of sleep with it, it doesn’t do the trick every night. But it also helps me during the day block the light, when I had a bad night of sleep.
The Sweet Dreams Collection also has a Neck Wrap ($18)and an All Over Body Wrap ($20). Typing all day long, I sure could use that Neck Wrap! Love those! Made with Flax Seed, pop them in the micro, and lay them on the shoulders, oh, a slice of my grandma’s butterscotch pie! (aka heaven)

Make it Monday it Monday, Grow an Avocado Plant from Seed!
September 14, 2009 by Karissa
Filed under Recipes: Home, Skin, Food
Here is a great project to do with your kids. Or if you are like me, to do by yourself! So much better then sprouting a potato!
Take one or more, if you like, of your avocado seeds and sprout them in water, then start yourself a new houseplant!
Now the likely hood of you actually eating any fruits of your labor are pretty slim to zilch pickins. it takes about a decade for an outdoor variety to put forth fruit. and even longer for an indoor, and even if your indoor did happen to bear fruit, it probably wouldn’t taste very good. Sad isn’t it? I think so. I mean really how awesome would it be to go into your living room and pick an avocado off your house plant to make tonight’s dinner? lol
I had 4 of these but we gave away all of our houseplants last year thinking that was what may have been causing Craig’s allergies. Well, it wasn’t. And I am devastated. Some of those houseplants held a great deal of sentimental value, and some just great memories! Like of the avocado plants I taught one of the neighbor kids how to make.
- Make sure it is ripe, you don’t want to use an under-ripe fruit as the seed may not be ready.
- Cut, and spoon out meat. Eat it, put it in your hair, slather it on your face, put it on your feet, and put socks on, whatever, never waste it!
- Take 3 or 4 toothpicks, poke one in evenly around middle of seed, this is a little tricky, make sure you have cleaned seed off so it isn’t slippery! they only need to go in about 1/4 of an inch.
- Now suspend in a glass of filtered water. Make sure the fat bottom is suspended in the water, and the skinnier portion is getting oxygen. Change water every few days, and leave in a warm spot, not a hot, spot, and make sure it gets plenty of light.
Seed will shed it’s skin, this is normal and you can discard of it.
At 2-3 weeks you should see the seed splitting, and roots shooting out, and at 5-6 weeks you should seed the top of the seed open and a stem sprout out. If the first doesn’t happen you can either toss the seed, or give it another week. This is why it might be a good idea, if doing the project with kids, to start more then one seed. A lot of trucks that bring Avocados to the midwest are refrigerated.
When the stem gets to be about 6 inches off the top, pinch back the first two leaves to encourage root growth.
Now you can plant! Make sure you use nice enriched soil. a good hearty blend. about a 8-10″ pot. Every time the plant grows 6 inches, pinch out the newest 2 sets of leaves. It will encourage root growth, and make the plant nice and bushy.
This is part of the Make it Monday Series!

100% Pure Review and Giveaway
**This post is going to be long, so if you want to learn more about 100% Pure please go check out their About page. It tells you more about their Vegan standards, no perfumes and fragrances, no thickeners or emulisifiers and so much more great stuff about them!**
The first time I ever tried 100% Pure was the middle of last year. I purchased their Blood Orange Body Cream and Organic Lavender SeaFoam Face Wash. The Facewash was still in a glass jar then, they have since moved to a plastic tube. Makes for cheaper shipping, and easier use. I was so wow’ed by that cleanser that I am not sure how to explain it. I was going through some really horrible breakouts. I had just gotten out of the hospital in Chicago, and I was really depressed.
Just look at the ingredients, nothing harsh, nothing acidic, just clean! or 100% Pure
Ingredients: Seaweeds (Kelp, Sea Lettuce, Spirulina),Green Tea, French Green Sea Clay, Saponified Coconut Oil, Vitamin C (ascorbyl palmitate), Vitamin E (a-tocopherol), Sea Buckthorn Oil, Rosehip Oil, Extracts of Pomegranate, Grapefruit Seed and Rosemary, Lavender Essential Oil, Extracts of Cinnamon, Thyme, Goldenseal and Oregano
The Cleanser had me hook line and sinker. And the Blood Orange Nourishing Body Cream reeled me in like a big ol floppy fish! 100% Natural, 100% Vegetarian, Gluten free The smell is so intoxicating, it is nearly sinful. Sweet like citrus, but not sweet like candy. I don’t like to smell like a little girl, so you can trust me on that one. I just can’t put my finger on an adjective to describe it. It is just uplifting. When you put it on, you just can’t help but smile.
Highly nourishing, luxuriously rich, delicious Organic Blood Orange Body Cream, concentrated with potent anti- aging antioxidants, vitamins, softening fruit oils, and moisturizing avocado and cocoa butters. Incredibly decadent smelling blood orange cream will immediately hydrate, soften and give you dewy, glowing skin. Never any artificial fragrances, synthetic chemicals, chemical preservatives, alcohol or other toxins. Made with all natural, highest quality, organic, ingredients.
So then, I had to wait forever to order anything else. I broke down when I saw that 100% Pure was going to be on QVC. Remember me tellling you about that?
So they had a kit that contained, their Ultra Lengthening Black Tea Mascara, Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20, and their Coffee Bean Eye Cream, all for $30 a $75 for $30!!! yeah, I couldn’t resist! I had been wanting to find a good natural if not organic mascara forever! So i placed my order as soon as I found them on sale.
All of the Skincare, bath products and cosmetics are colored with fruit and vegetable pigments! The mascara uses black tea pigments, but is 100% natural and 100% vegetarian. Simply amazing. It is awesome too! Leaves my lashes black and glossy! Thick and long. I am telling you, it performs better then the non-natural mascara i had been hanging onto! I am so sad that I had lost touch with 100% Pure. I need a store here in Indianapolis! (err, that might be a bad idea!)

100% natural mascara lengthens, separates, thickens and glosses lashes with fruit pigments and Black tea pigments. Gentle, all natural, good for you formula is suitable for everyone, even if you wear contacts or have sensitive eyes. Water and smudge resistant. Comes in 4 shades, Black Tea, Blackberry, Blueberry, and Dark Chocolate.
I actually haven’t tried the Coffee Berry Eye Cream yet. I simply have too many eye creams open right now, and I don’t want to open another! But here is a independent study:
I did however try out the Tinted Moisturizer with Spf 20. I have the Golden Peach color. The moisture level is spot on, not greasy at all! That is a problem I have had with some tinted moisturizers, other companies want to put shea butter in them, and that is just too much on my face. It is a sheer to medium coverage so if I do have bad circles under my eyes, I put a little concealer on, or a bad acne mark, same thing. I don’t have a problem with that! It has zinc in it, one of it’s forms of SPF protections, and that will help heal skin irritations- so that is just another bonus!
The Tinted Moisturizer also has white tea, acai oil, pomegranate oil and vitamins. While antioxidants protect your skin from environmental hazards such as pollution, smog, smoke, exhaust, etc.
Ingredients: Pigments of Peach, Apricot, Carrot, Pomegranate, Goji Berry and Tomato, White Tea, Cucumber Juice, Aloe Juice, Acai and Pomegranate Oil, Vitamin E (a-tocopherol), Vitamin C (ascorbyl palmitate), Chamomile and Lavender wax, extracts of Rosemary, Oregano, Thyme, Grapefruit Seed, Goldenseal and Cinnamon, Lavender Essential Oil
SUNSCREEN ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: 15% Titanium Dioxide and 10% Zinc Oxide
Even now, knowing how good for you these products are, and having tested at least 4. I am simply stunned when I read the ingredients. I almost feel like I am being punked. Like, “no way can these products be THIS GOOD, and yet have so few ingredients, and all of them are healthy, and protective for your skin!” But it is true!!! and most of them are organic!
sooo, I have a special treat for you!!!
I have an Ultra Lengthening Black Tea Mascara, Tinted Moisturizer with Spf 20 in Peach Bisque, and their Coffee Bean Eye Cream for one Prissy Green Reader! I thought the Peach Bisque Tinted Moisturizer would be the safest bet for this coming winter. And since it is a sheer coverage I think it will match just about any skin tone.
To enter, head over to 100% Pure and tell me a unique product you would like to try. It can’t be anything that was mentioned here today. Make it something special! They have cool bath specialty products, all sorts of cosmetics, skin care for face and body and so much more!
Remember, this kit is worth $75!!!

Homestead Company Review and Giveaway

The Homestead Company Started back in 2005. It originally started as a resource in teaching mothers how to care for their babies in the most natural way possible, more as a good neighbor program. That formed into a home-based business for sharing knowledge of nutrition and health wellness. Each product is designed to make your skin healthier, with a specific health concern in mind. Using natural, good wholesome ingredients, that can make you feel safe and secure about what you are using on your skin, and your children’s skin.
Melanie Nader is the owner, founder and creator of the company, plus the mom to 5 kids! “Every mom knows the struggles of a baby who cries in the night due to diaper rash, eczema or other skin ailment. We address each of these problems with specific products, and guarantee that our products will work.”
Nader personally created and patented all the products in The Homestead Company line. Each batch is purposely made in small numbers to ensure precision, and careful detail has been considered in every step of production; even our bottling process is designed to preserve the natural quality of the products. The Homestead Company proudly makes all products in the U.S.A.
I seriously have THE softest feet on the planet right now. literally. I use this maybe twice a week. And I apply the Peppermint foot lotion each night before I got to bed. It is dreamy!
The Homestead Company’s Hand & Foot Scrub is more creamy and moisturizing then anything, so perfect for summer feet! My feet can get so beat during the summer, and tired. I actually apply it to dry feet. I let my feet soak in the shower, then I get out, dry them off, and scrub it in, then let it soak up the yummy ingredients, then spray it off. I come up with crazy methods for everything! (on sale for only $13.99)
- With Coconut Oil and natural sea salt, this will exfoliate the rough skin and add moisture while nourishing the skin.
- Emu oil is known for softening dry skin, and while massaging the foot scrub you are not only taking off the dry skin, you are massaging emu oil into your skin to help end dry skin.
The lotion I mentioned earlier that I rub into my feet every night before I go to bed, is the Homestead Company’s Peppermint/Eucalyptus Lotion. It wakes my feet up, and keeps them from feeling so heavy. It is so hard for me to fall asleep at night when my legs feel like lead. Also makes my hands feel really nice, the scent is pretty light, so it isn’t waking my senses up, or making me tingly. It is really just the right amount. (on sale for $9.99)
- Most lotions have ingredients that actually dry out the skin, causing your skin to need more frequent applications. Once you try our lotion, you will experience the difference, and in the end actually save money.
- Moistens, softens dry skin on hands and feet.
- Long lasting softening affects.
- Remember, no lotion can bring dead skin back to life, it needs to be exfoliated, so use the foot scrub to take the calloused and dry skin away and keep them soft with our all natural foot lotion.
- Can also be used over entire body as a great massage lotion, or deep moisturizer.
Homestead Company also has many Baby products including a Diaper Rash treatment Plus Eczema cream, Body butters and Scrubs, and more!
They have offered up a $50 Gift Certificate to one Prissy Green Reader! This way you can purchase what ever you would like! Hopefully some pampering goodies for yourself! To enter, go to the Homestead Company, and tell me one other product that you would like to try that hasn’t been mentioned here.
