The Lazy Environmentalist on a Budget Review and Giveaway

In The Lazy Environmentalist on a Budget, Josh Dorfman—host of the Sirius Satellite Radio program of the same name—provides comprehensive guidance to fashion-forward consumers who are as concerned about the long-term health of our planet as they are about the design of their bathroom fixtures. Covering topics that range from clothing to electronic gadgetry, home decor to recreation, and gardening to financial investment, Dorfman lets us know which trends to watch and which eco-conscious products—cars, toothbrushes, cell phones, pet accessories—to buy. Green, it turns out, can be an extremely stylish color.
What I truly love about this book, is that it not only teaches you the things you want to know NOW, but it also gives you resources to stay on top of it for the future. He lists many, oodles of many online resources for everything he discusses, from clothes to water conservation.

You can easily and affordably have your designer jeans and contribute to a green planet too. From raising eco-conscious kids to greening your daily commute, the Lazy Environmentalist Josh Dorfman provides insights into the next wave of green innovation and the products and services that will lighten your planetary impact and lower your expenses.

We compost, take our own grocery bags to the store and no longer purchase bottled water, instead we bottle our own with filtered water and stainless steel bottles.
We also walk to pick up the sunday paper instead of having it delivered.
Not too unique but I recycle magazines, books, newspapers and reconstruct and reuse clothing, linens, gardening pots, etc. Thanks for the giveaway.

Okay, my fiance grows most of our vegetables. And instead of buying chemicals or fertilizer he uses fish poop to fertilize the plants. Sound weird, I know, but it really works!
Thanks for the giveaway…
We wash our dishes by hand ** and save the wash & rinse water(i.e. "greywater") to water our garden / landscaping in the summertime; the tomato & pepper plants don't seem to mind, same with the flowers and trees.

We do all the basic green lifestyle things. As for semi-unique actions, I keep empty dry cat food bags and use them to collect the dirty (earth-friendly) litter. I don't dispose of the bag until it's full. This saves a lot over using one plastic bag for each litterbox cleaning!! (And the bag contains the odor since it has an inner coating that was meant to keep the cat food 'fresh' (use holistic cat food as well). Thanks!!

I don't know how unique it is, but I am the only person in the house who knows where the paper towels are so everyone is forced to use the cloths instead.
There is a communal garden – huge – on the property next door grown by and for all of the redsidents for my landlady.
We throw pumpkin seeds into the field behind our house; by fall, there is a vine with many pumpkins for the kids in the neighborhood!

We use eco-friendly light bulbs and dispose of the old ones properly. We use reusable grocery bags all the time now. I unplug things like our radio, coffee pot, stand mixer when we aren't using them to save a little electricity, we see a small difference on our electric bill.

To be greener we have planted our first veggie garden and we recycle paper.
We haven't used paper towels in over a year. Instead we use rags and just wash them regularly.
My husband and I car pool to work.
We pay a local farm money upfront to help them cover all the costs in planting, in return, we get weekly boxes of fresh produce for the rest of the season. Yummy!
What a great giveaway!

We don't do a whole lot "out of the norm" to save the environment…I use reuseable bags, constantly remind the kids to turn off lights/electronics they're not using. But we also sometimes join groups down on our local beach to pick up trash that has been left or has washed ashore. My children love helping the wildlife have a cleaner environment!
Great giveaway. We do the regular recycling, composting, turning off lights and we also have 2 organic plots at the local community garden.
Thanks

It may be considered more of a bribe than a help LOL – but we have gallon glass jugs in each of the kids rooms to encourage turning off the lights.
Every hour or so, we do a 'room check' A penny goes in everytime the lights are off; 2 pennies are taken if the light's on and the room is empty.

I suppose this could be semi-unique. I work in a place where we receive lots of mail on a daily basis. With this mail comes lots of cover letters that we don't need so they get tossed in the mail! This is at LEAST 100 pieces of paper (usually NICE paper) that is tossed out everyday! It was really bothering me so I started collecting them and now use them to print on on the side where they have not already been printed. Example – I print a lot of coupons out from the internet – these papers are perfect for this!

The "community" of people who rent from my landlady have two large gardens of food and herbs, we recycle and compost and we're building a green house. We have water rights to a near by stream that with some mechanical thingee we can water our garden so we don't need to use a hose.
Not sure how unusual that is?
Hi, to recycle, we collected the water bottles we used in a month's time and gave them to a public school that was collecting them to use for a 'moat' project they were building to show us how many bottles our being used unnecessarily.

I use my daughter’s bathwater to water my plants. I sprinkle spent coffee grounds around my yard to keep the kitties from pooping in it. I safe my breakfast bar wrappers to send them to TerraCycle to upcycle. I use worm poop on my organic veggies. Not sure if they qualify as semi-unique or not. Hope they do!
After we learned that more than 38 billion disposable plastic bottles end up in landfills every year in the United States. we decided that instead of adding to that number, we would change totally to reusable water bottles and fill them with filtered water. We love it!!

I don't know how unique this is-I don't see many people doing it anymore-we hang out our laundry. Thank you!

I can't say I do anything semi-unique, but we started our own garden at a local farm & on our apartment porch.
We recycle everything, but we bike to do it. Maybe that is semi-unique?? We bike a lot more even to grocery store to get a lot of groceries. We use a water filter, reusable bags, reuse bread bags, sandwich bags etc. We make our own soil from our food scraps.

I try to plant one tree a year.

I buy almost exclusively used clothing and household items. No need to buy new stuff when I can get used for a fraction of the price and keep it from going to the landfill.
I can't say anything is semi-unique but I just started a veggie garden, have been hanging my clothes to dry (my bathroom looks so funny in the winter because of this), recycling everything, and I take my reusuable bag with me everywhere. Love the site!

I bury my dogs' poop instead of wrapping it in plastic and dropping it in the waste stream.

One thing I've been doing is hanging my clothes out to dry instead of using a dryer.

My Mom is a total care and she always has a bottle of water. I got her a Brita and a reusable bottle and now thats all she uses plus all the extra money she saves by not buying bottle water
Thanks

I switched from paper towels to microfiber cloths for much of my cleaning. Thanks!

We banned paper products (except toilet paper) and we have our own vegetable garden.

I don't know how unique these are, and forgive a little self-promotion, but I started a Back2Tap campaign at my school, as well as a recycling program. I also make all of our cleaning products, bath and skin care, and baby products myself. We don't use disposable paper towels, napkins or tissues. I make my products affordable so that others can easily go greener too. And I've eliminated all preserved-specimen dissections from my school district's middle school science curriculum. I'd love to win this book and collect a whole bunch of fresh ideas!
Thanks!
