Cleansing, not just for skin!

Craig (the mister) and I took part in a cleanse when we got back from Florida. Mainly because he wanted to lose weight and I am, well a bit of a health nut when it comes to eating. (not to say I don’t enjoy a few fries and ketchup, i am human!)

I have done some pretty radical cleanses for health purposes and they really do help. You just can’t cheat, and sometimes having a partner is the best way to help not to cheat and it helps to have someone share the dishes with you. You will use the cutting board and a good knife constantly and the dishwasher just won’t clean fast enough!

So basically for 5 days (until we had to be out for a dinner) we ate only raw veggies, quinoa, and the only fruit we had was lemon juice and 1 granny smith apply for a snack. Most fruits are pretty high in natural sugars and you want to leave out all sugar on these cleanses to really let the fiber do it’s job. (no sugar, no caffeine, no tobacco, no meat, no fish, no cheese or dairy at all!)

Besides this we had what we call our shakes. no, not a tasty shake. These are pretty icky. Take 2 heaping tablespoons of Bentonite Clay ( you can buy this at Living Clay.com) 1 tablespoon of Psylium Husks, and 2 heaping tablespoons of ground Flax seed ( flaxmatters.com) Mix this all together, and unless you get the flax from Flax Matters, refridgerate.
Take about 1 cup of water add 2 heaping tablespoons of colon cleanser and drink 4 times a day.

The only tricky part is that you want to drink this in between meals. So at least 1 hour before and/or after any meals. So one as soon as you wake, one before and after lunch and one right before bed. but keep in mind no eating after and no eating before! AND if you are on any medical prescriptions you need to take those 2 hours before or 2 hours after. The bentonite clay would absorb too much and you wouldn’t get enough of the medication. If you get too constipated on this you cut back the shakes until your normal again.

So mornings at our house went like this:
Shake
1hour later, avocado and tomato with EVOO and some lemon juice or i would make a pureed veggie cocktail
about an hour later I would make some cocktail of fresh veggie juice
an hour later, Shake, no sooner then an hour>
lunch: salad full of mixed greens (mustard, kale, romaine, etc) with tons of veggies. Radishes, asparagus, beets, red and yellow peppers and avocado. with only the dressing I listed above. you can place a few ground or sliced almonds on top but you have to find uncooked 100% raw almonds, no smoked or salted here! =)
1 juice cocktail
shake
dinner: usually a nice big salad like the one earlier but always keep in mind the more veggies and the bigger the variety the better!
One night we added Quinoa to our salad, it has a great nutty flavor to liven things up. but i like it better on the side.
granny smith apple for a snack
shake

I also made my awesome Asparagus and Cherry tomato salad but I used regular tomatoes and I added Parsley. (http://www.prissygreen.com/2009/04/make-it-monday-asparagus-tomato-salad.html)

Parsley should be on every meal you eat and in every juice! it has fantastic detoxing properties. As well as lemon juice. you should also take in no less then 2 1/2 quarts of water a day.

There are a few other salads we are going to test this week, one is a beet salad another is a carrot salad.

One of my FAVORITE meals and Craig’s LEAST favorite was this semi-warm soup. I mean I had mine ate with in minutes, Craig never finishes his. i think his was all in his head.
1 cup veg stock
1 1/2 cups of broccoli (chopped)
1/2 yellow onion (chopped)
1 red of yellow pepper (chopped)
2 stalks of celery (chopped)
1 avocado peeled and sliced
sea salt
Cumin or grated ginger
Lemon juice

Warm Veggie stock to 118 degrees, no warmer!! add broccoli and onions, and let set and warm for 5 minutes. Then turn off heat, add bell pepper and celery and let sit (stir it) for 5 minutes. I used a lid but kept my temp at or below 118 degrees. then add all that to the blender and puree, add the avocado and salt and cumin or ginger and blend until smooth. A few drops of lemon juice if warranted.
I am telling you this was delish!

The reasoning behind the temp of 118 is that the enzymes in fresh veggies start to break down if heated over that temp. (I know some of you must know raw foodies?)

I have several more recipes some i have found online and some (most) I use from the book Juicing, Fasting and Detoxing for Life by Cherie Calbom.

The juicing I would do would mainly consist of 1 cucumber, peeled, about 1 inch of ginger ( i dont like ginger but I dealt with it!) 1 cup of spinach, 1-2 handfulls of parsley, 1 beet, 2 radishes, sprouts any, 1-2 carrots, 2 stalks of celery. juice it all.
To juice you really must have a quality juicer but you can always play around with puree on your blender and finely chopping veggies before you put in.

Okay, some of you are probably enthralled and some of you might be like, who the heck is this chick? but I promise give this a week and you will feel better. I do really suggest getting the book, Juicing, Fasting and Detoxing for Life by Cherie Calbom so you have a variety of soups (mostly cold) and cocktails but if you really can’t do that right now, eating raw for a week and doing the shakes could really help out a sluggish system.

oh yea did I forget to mention we are doing it again? yes, this time I hope for a full week. You don’t have to go hungry on this, it truly isn’t a diet, although you may lose weight since you won’t be eating much fat or any animal proteins.

So is anyone interested in more of this process? Would you like me to try and detail this from the start this week? i would be happy to share what we are eating but I wanted to make sure someone cares before I do!

Why Lush Won’t Ever Save Me.

June 7, 2009 by Karissa
Filed under Info You Want to Know

I have had a few people ask me to feature Lush on my blog lately. I think some people are confused by Lush, and granted they have some pretty dope (sounding) products, they still use some questionable ingredients and that is why I will not feature them. (although maybe this post is a feature? lol) I will admit their site is completely intoxicating and they have some great marketers!

SLS, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, that nasty chemical used for heavy degreasing of machines and floors. Also a known acne contributing agent. I think it goes with out saying, this would most likely dry up your skin and cause premature wrinkles too.

Parabens, Along with SLS I probably don’t even need to go into this, but the quick fact? Has been found in women’s breast tissue that have breast cancer. eww. no thanks!

Propylene Glycol, weakens cell structure, so other additives (whether natural or not) can penetrate the skin. Some say it is okay in small quantities. The web and soap makers are all over the board on this one!

I don’t really research a company once I get to those ingredients so there might be more, but my job here is done! =)

NOW I will say they have a few items that are ok. (their lip balms contain alcohol and well that just plain isn’t neccasary so those are on my no no list too)
Their Bath Bombs are okay, but why add perfume if you already have essential oils?

This isn’t a bash on Lush, trust me, their are TONS and oodles of tons of companies that have way worse ingredients, or at least more of those gross ingredients in their products, I just wanted to clarify with some readers why I wasn’t in a rush for Lush.

On a side note separate from Lush, I will admit, that I am not the end all know it all of all things green and natural, BUT please always refer back to your Dirty Dozen list and make sure those ingredients are not in your products. Green Blogs are popular and some other blogs are getting in on it, but will feature a product like the one mentioned, so it is truly and always up to you to protect yourself and your family. (no I am not bitching about other blogs, everyone needs a piece of the pie but don’t tout a product as natural if you don’t know what is in it.)

be well pretties. if you ever have a product you would like me to try review or feature, my door err email box is always open! Prissy Green at gmail dot com.

Shē Essential Beauty Review and Giveaway

Such a luxurious line for a fair price!

Shē Essential Beauty was founded by Laura Kauffmann and Beth Hooper, licensed acupuncturists and Chinese herbalists. Wanting more from a skincare line, Laura and Beth decided to create a brand centered around the concept of beauty from within, mirroring the holistic approach they offer in their Chinese medical practices.
Both Laura and Beth hold Master’s Degrees in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and maintain their private practices in New York City. (sometimes i feel like I need to move to NYC!)

Shē Essential Beauty integrates the ancient philosophy of Chinese medicine with modern research to bring you a lush blend of aromatic ingredients formulated with Chinese herbs. We believe only the purest substances should go into your skincare regime, so we are dedicated to creating rich, organic beauty products, applying the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Shē Essential Beauty embodies the definition of luxury, blending each product by hand, we maintain a richness that awakens the senses in a balanced way. Committed to working without chemicals, we offer a Green viewpoint to beauty by incorporating natural, organic and wild-crafted ingredients.

I know that some of you are aware that i am currently utilizing the Oil Cleansing Method for a daily part of my skin care. ( i wash my face with the OCM at least once a day) Well She Essential beauty offers this decadent Facial Serum. It is
Packed with vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids, the facial serum is naturally beneficial to all skin types. Inspired by the beauty regimes of the ancient of China, they have blended the highest grade Chinese pearl with nutrient rich oils (jojoba) and silk amino acids for added skin rejuvenation benefits.

I have been using this mainly for my after wash moisturizer at night. I admit I did add a dab of tea tree oil, but that is because I am so acne prone. I love this, it comes in a spray, not a pump which makes it even easier to spread. it has been a wonderful addition to my beauty pantry, for dry skin a little spray midway through a lotion application and i end up with the silkiest skin!

I also using their Washing Grains. This really is a perfect all in one product for gentle exfoliation for your face as well as a deep cleanser that is GENTLE! I have realized that I need gentle cleansers to combat my acne, not stripping cleansers. Their Washing Grains have done a great service to my skin in leaving it fresh and clean but not dried out! it is a blend of nourishing flowers & oatmeal, combine with the astringent effects of Chinese pearl and jasmine tea to clean and tighten pores while gently detoxifying the skin, leaving behind an anti-oxidant shield and healthy glow.
I have also used this as a mask after cleaning my skin and it left it so very soft and smooth!

Here are their ingredients and why they work! (click on the link)
Herbs
Essential oils
Exfoliants/Salts/Sugars
Butters/Oils/Waxes
Preservatives

So would you like to win a a Lavender-lemongrass Sugar Scrub from Shē Essential Beauty? Go to Shē Essential Beauty, and tell me a product you would like to try, besides the two I have mentioned here, and the Lavender-Lemongrass scrub.

Sorry for the lateness, i was so busy all day I never had a chance to even look over here!

Here is a wonderful glass cleaner recipe: (basic and most have seen before i am sure!)

Mix in a spray bottle or bucket:

1 cup rubbing alcohol
1 cup water
1 tablespoon white vinegar

Automatic Dishwasher cleaner:

1/2 cup grated castille soap
1/2 cup washing soda
1 cup baking soda
1/4 cup citric acid (will get the film off of everything, you can use lemonade mix too!)

Mix and then grind to fine powder (or as close as you can get the soap to go) and use vinegar as a rinse agent.

Super soap scum/grease/anything that needs a major cleaning
split a lemon or a lime in half and juice, we make lots of margaritas so we have use for the lime juice! then take those juiced halves and add to 12 oz of Vinegar. Let sit for at least 48 hrs.
best grease getter, soap scrum remover etc. If you have really stuck on scum feel free to use baking soda too.

Hairy Clogged Drain

  • 2-3 tablespoons Baking Powder mixed in luke-warm water
  • 1 cup Vinegar

1) Mix Baking Powder in water and dissolve as much as possible. Pour down the offending drain. The longer it takes the better – the baking powder will soak in.

2) *Slowly* pour in vinegar. Listen to it fizz! That’s how you know it’s working. Together, these will kill all of the germs or bacteria growing in your drain, which can catch hair and generally gunk things up. It will also loosen all but the most stubborn hair balls.

3) Chase with very hot water – boiling hot if possible.

4) Repeat as necessary.

I just did this on the Mister’s sink, it has basically been clogged ever since we moved in, and well, I have SOO much beauty stuff on my side of the sink, I didnt want him shaving and getting hair on it! lol It totally worked too!

Bleach Alternative for Laundry use a 1/2 cup of Hydrogen Peroxide.

West County Garden Gloves Review

June 4, 2009 by Karissa

I wear my Ethel Gloves when I garden, just about everything I do, i will have them on. But when I have a tougher job, like pulling out BIG weeds and digging holes in my full CLAY soil, I love to use my West County Gardener Gloves.

Plus I don’t feel guilty using them, they are partially made from recycled materials, and even this year they have made their gloves THE NEW WORK, LANDSCAPE AND CLASSIC GLOVES will now be made with a fabric that comes from recycled water bottles. Each pair of West County Gloves will remove one 8 oz water bottle from landfills. Our new fabric is stronger, softer, and easier on the planet.

From Planting Seedlings, to laying a patio, or cleaning gutters, West County Gardener® has a glove for every season and task. Through an innovative combination of materials and construction techniques once found only in premium athletic apparel, we’ve created the world’s first high performance gardening gloves for both weekend and professional gardeners and landscapers. Like all great tools, their design and functionality help you work with comfort and ease

West County Gloves® are known for their signature snug fit. Frustrated by the ‘one size fits all’ model found in most work gloves, we’ve developed a wide range of sizes in both men’s and women’s gardening gloves. Our women’s gloves are tailored specifically to fit a woman’s narrower hand and longer fingers. Having the right fit means no blisters and no extra bulk to get in the way.

Our Goal is to design and engineer the best fitting high performance gloves for you and your needs. We listen to our customers and continually make small ‘running changes’ based on user feedback. Which means, we make the best gloves you’ll ever wear. More than that, West County continues to invent and innovate to help make your time outdoors more enjoyable, productive and comfortable.

My gloves are the Work Gloves, and they fit perfectly, and what I am doubly happy with is no man will come along and steal these, they would be too small for them. YAY! The Work glove is reinforced everywhere your hand comes in contact with tools or soil. The palm is lightly padded for impact protection. The 4-way stretch nylon mesh back improves ventilation, flexibility, and fit. The adjustable elastic cuff keeps out dirt and is brushed on the inside for added comfort. Their signature terry cloth thumb functions as a brow wipe. (and I used that a lot when I was mulching the flower gardens Monday!

They have many types of gloves, the Classic, Rose, Landscape, Waterproof and even a kids sized glove.

Now you might have to use your imagination on the Rose glove, but yes it is made for pruning your roses! it has a longer sleeve on it, to protect your hands as well as your forearms.

The Classic is just a little less of a glove then the Work Glove but perfect for planting and general duties around the garden, it has a longer cuff to protect your wrists as well.

Now the Landscape is reinforced with Kevlar to protect you during some more heavy duty jobs around the garden.

The Waterproof is yes, waterproof, and will keep your hands warm and dry.

If you need more then a planting glove, try out West County Garden gloves! Buy at Amazon.com or from their website, West County Gardener.

Cool Blossom Review

Cool Blossom carries Organic Bamboo sleepwear for all women!

oh Bamboo clothing, how I love thee! If you haven’t already found yourself buying a shirt made of Bamboo, do yourself a favor and treat yourself pronto. It is silky, with out being sticky, and well, just about the best thing next to the skin!

  • Bamboo is a fabric which is incredibly soft and comfortable.
  • Bamboo provides superior natural wicking capabilities without the use of chemically applied topicals.
  • Bamboo is naturally anti-microbial.
  • Bamboo is hypoallergenic.
  • Bamboo is environmentally friendly; it is the fastest growing plant in the world and is an easily renewable resource.
  • Bamboo is grown without use of fertilizers or pesticides and supports some of the poorest economies in the world.
  • Bamboo Nights® is beneficial for women in transition, going through chemotherapy or who are pregnant. (due to the fact that is lets your skin breathe!!)

I sampled a Chemise Sleep Shirt from Cool Blossom, it is basically a long tank top, sits a couple a , but what i love is that little above mid thigh and has a relaxed built in shelf bra. It lets me move around comfortably yet holds me in place too. i think she must be a little taller then me, as it is longer then that on me. I could almost wear it as a nightie and I am 5′8!
It is so very comfortable. Perfect for someone how sleeps hot like I do, or for someone in a warmer climate that doesnt turn the air down to 68 degrees! lol

They have tons of options and I think are priced very competively for durable sleep wear, this isn’t something that you are going to have to throw out in a years time, OR be embarrassed of being seen in it in a year. Their craftsmanship is top of the line and will last for years.

A last note, I feel it is more important to wear organic clothing to bed then at any other time. Your skin absorbs more while you are sleeping, plus our body temperature raises while we sleep, this means if there are any absorbable pesticides on your clothing you are more likely to absorb them while you sleep. So sleep comfortably in Organic Bamboo!

Glowelle Review and Giveaway

June 3, 2009 by Karissa

Nutraceuticals (”beauty foods” or “nutracosmetics”) are a big trend in Japan and Europe, according to this MediaPost article. About Glowelle they say:

Glowelle, a beauty drink dietary supplement that “protects and hydrates the inner and outer layers of the skin,” includes a proprietary blend of high-antioxidant vitamins, botanical and fruit extracts, and phtyo-nutrients. (Phyto-nutrients are organic components of plants shown in studies to reduce cancer risk and enhance human health, although Glowelle isn’t making health claims). The product’s core selling point is its claim that it “fights the signs of aging by nourishing your skin from within.

For now Glowelle is only being sold at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.

Glowellesticks

The Glowelle powder sticks come in 7-day ($40) and 30-day ($112) packs, respectively. They also have bottled drinks, which are $7 each.

Glowellepacks

The flavors are Raspberry/Jasmine and Pomegranate Lychee. I was fortunate enough to try both, and I have to say I like the Raspberry a little more then the Pomegranate, but not by much! Now keep in mind when you try these, that they are chock full of vitamins and minerals, so it isn’t going to be a taste sensation like drinking a refreshing lemonade. this is Beauty food! You will taste a little vitamin. But that doesn’t mean they are drinkable or even flavorfull.

For me, I can’t say I saw any wrinkles disappear, but i also spent a week in Florida, so… But I did see it help to heal up some acne that I broke out with. It was pretty amazing how much faster my skin seemed to heal up.

One stick is 50 calories, contains 120% of your RDA for Vitamin A, 417% of your Vitamin C, 147% Vitamin E and 143% of your selenium. all healthy skin vitamins, PLUS an abundance of other minerals and extracts all protecting your skin health. Packed with antioxidants, white and green tree extracts, vitamin E and goji berries, Glowelle serves as a dietary supplement that starts from the inside out.

If there ever was a fountain of youth, this is giving it a run for it’s money! Plump your skin, reduce your wrinkles and heal other skin related problems, although they are not making medical claims, we all know what eating right can do for our skin. This is like eating fish and almonds all day, minus the calories or breath! lol

I have 5 (FIVE) kits to giveaway to Prissy Green Readers, your choice of flavor. You will get a weeks supply of Glowelle and a nice little zippered packet to place them in, so you can take them anywhere. (it is the kit pictured above) To win, simply go to Glowelle and tell me one thing you learned there.
