Herbs and Beauty

A few common herbs that you can make into your own personal beauty arsenal!

Do you have Bacne? or acne on any part of your body that you need to heal in a pinch?
Try taking a bath with 1 liter of Chamomile and Thyme Tea. Make your own tea if you need to!

Neem oil is shown to be beneficial to Psoriasis and Eczema and dandruff suffers! It is a VERY STRONG smelling oil and not really pleasant so you may want to dilute with some coconut oil or any lotion you might already have at home that doesn’t irritate your already fragile skin. It has healing anti-bacterial properties.

Need something for chapped gardener’s hands? Try Olive Oil infused with Comfrey. All you have to do is take a clean jar with lid, and place many Comfrey leaves in it, then fill and cover with Olive Oil (you don’t have to use the pricier EVOO for this get the cheap stuff) and wait 6 weeks. You can use this for just about any skin irritation!

Or maybe you remember my homemade shampoo recipes? Here is the link, Thrifty Thursday, Shampoo Anyone? Chamomile, Peppermint, Rosemary and Thyme! Rosemary is especially beneficial to us brunettes, giving us shine like nothing else.
Just a little refresher on some easy shampoo recipes you can make easily at home, with basically tea and castille soap!

Ever heard of Evening Primrose Oil? Maybe as a supplement? Very easy to find, most of your drugstores now even carry it. Evening primrose oil contains linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid that is not produced by your body, but which promotes healthy, rejuvenated skin. Take either orally or topically apply to help ease wrinkles, plump skin and just over give you healthy glowing skin!

Ten Thousand Villages Review

June 9, 2009 by Karissa

I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to review a couple of items from such a unique and cool store.

Vision

One day all artisans in the developing countries will earn a fair wage, be treated with dignity and respect and be able to live a life of quality.

Ten Thousand Villages provides vital, fair income to Third World people by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America. Ten Thousand Villages works with artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. This income helps pay for food, education, health care and housing. Ten Thousand Villages is a nonprofit program of Mennonite Central Committee.

Now that i have the mister in on the Fair Trade circle, i think he will start decorating and buying more consciously, then just finding something he likes and buying it. I don’t want to think about a child picking the cotton to make my sheets of sewing my couch etc.

I have this hanging on one of my living room walls now, The Tree of Life. I hope it comes across to you as pretty as it is here at home. I thought it was even prettier when I pulled it out of it’s wrapping. it is shinier and well, just plain cool. Our living room walls are a dark beige, maybe a red tinted mocha and this just fits right in. Haitian artisans recycle 55-gallon metal drums into this lustrous black wall hanging. Detailed hammered cutwork celebrates the natural world.

I also have these fantastic recycled paper coasters. (they had some at the condo we stayed at in FL!) Paper is coiled around broom bristle, joined with thread and glue, then starched for durability. Coasters will stand up to heat and moisture that comes with average use. I have been using this for a couple months now, and they live up to that statement, even in this humidity and sweaty glasses they are just as they were new!

The last item that I reviewed for Ten Thousand Villages is this drop dead gorgeous Bamboo Hamper. It is simply beautiful in the bedroom for our dirty clothes. and just too attractive to leave in a closet! It is a natural woven hamper made from sturdy kaisa grass. Kaisa grass dries from its natural light green to a very pale, almost tan color.

The page I love most at tenthousandvillages.com is their Green Gifts Page. You can find so many unique and wonderful gift or treats for yourself there. I just know that is where I will be getting oodles of gifts from now on.

Ten Thousand Villages Background:

As one of the oldest and largest nonprofit fair trade retailers, and one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies, we strive to improve the livelihood of tens of thousands of disadvantaged artisans in 38 countries by establishing a sustainable market for handmade products in North America.

As a nonprofit, we achieve this mission by building long term buying relationships in places where skilled artisan partners lack opportunities for stable income. Product sales help pay for food, education, health care and housing for artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed.

Our commitment to support artisans around the globe is strengthened through fair trade compensation practices including cash advances and prompt payments. More than 60 years later, and as the company continues to grow, Ten Thousand Villages has become increasingly conscious of the need to marry the concept of fair trade with healthy and environmentally sustainable business practices.

Today, tenthousandvillages.com continues to carry out a conscious approach toward minimizing an environmental impact. From store operations to product selection to marketing practices, Ten Thousand Villages strives to meet the “triple bottom line” of economic, environmental and social sustainability.

Thank you so much for the review items Ten Thousand Villages! I am a forever customer now. I really couldn’t be happier with my chosen items!

Amy’s Organics ~Wraps, Review and Giveaway

June 9, 2009 by Karissa

I absolutely adore food. I am also one of the least picky eaters I know. I can list what I don’t like on, umm, three fingers. i was going to say one hand but that still left some room!

I was really excited to learn about Amy’s Organics new Wraps! And even more excited when a package arrived last week for 2 of each flavor, Breakfast Scramble and the Teriyaki. My favorite is the Breakfast Scramble. I could go on a major fast with only to eat and be fine! It is made with a savory combination of tofu, vegetables and cheese seasoned to perfection in an organic flour tortilla. It is hearty but light, it filled me up and left me satisfied for hours (which is not easy to do!) but yet didn’t leave me overly full. (they are both vegetarian)

The Teriyaki Wrap is super too. Amy’s own delicious variation of traditional Japanese teriyaki sauce lends an intriguing sweet and sour flavor to the organic fluffy rice, vegetables and marinated tofu that fill this tasty wrap. It is just what I want my Teriyaki to taste like, not too sweet and I really love the fact that the sauce wasn’t dripping out the wrap. Some people over kill sauces and this was a solid blend.

I give both Wraps my stamp of approval! You can fix these in just a couple of minutes in the micro or you can use the over for about 45-50 minutes. I normally would do the oven anytime over a microwave but since the mister won’t eat Tofu, I was alone in my endeavor, so I chose to wave heat. I found that if you just set it on a plate it dries the wrap up which leads it to break. So the next one I fixed I moistened (just slightly) a paper towel with water then wrapped the wrap in that, it came out like it was froma burrito stand!

Would you like to have a gander at winning 2 free product coupons to Amy’s so you can try each of her new wraps? Plus you will get a cute cotton tote and a notebook-grocery bag and a place for your shopping list, how clever! There will be TEN winners!

To enter, just go to Amy’s Organics and tell me something you want to try from her line of natural and organic foods!

This is a TWO day contest so it will end Wednesday June 10 at 11:59pm EST. (it was going to be a one day but my emails already went out! lol)

**Be sure to check out my other GIVEAWAYS click on the link above the banner, top left.**

Contest will conclude on 6/10 at 11:59pm EST. Winner will be drawn by random.org and validated per rules. US and Canada.

Annie Chun Noodles and Sauces Giveaway !OVER!

June 8, 2009 by Karissa

THIS GIVEAWAY IS OVER!

Oh Annie what have done to me? Well first she taught me I could have an inexpensive healthy lunch with her noodle, rice and soup bowls. Read my review here

Now she has taught me to make Pad Thai (Craigs favorite!) and with her noodles and sauce, i only needed peanuts, sprouts and egg! well if you want chicken or shrimp you can add those too. But it was so easy! I used her Pad Thai noodles and her Pad Thai sauce, and basically got the noodles ready by soaking them in hot water, warmed up a skillet, added the egg, then the noodles, then a minute later the sauce, let that sit while I crushed some peanuts, and washed the bean sprouts, then added those. Ta Da!

We both wolfed it down. Since then I used her noodles and her Teryaki sauce to make Eggplant. It was as simple as soaking sliced eggplant in the sauce for about 20 minutes, grilling and preparing the noodles. Since eggplant isn’t a meat we saved the sauce and stir fried it all for a minute. Delish!

She has just about every sauce and noodle you can think of. I think next I am going for the Peanut Sauce, it is a great salad dressing too! YUM!

Annie’s would once again like to extend some freebs for Prissy Green Readers! How about 3 Grand Prize winners will receive noodle and sauce kits to make at home? I received 2 sauces and 4 packs of noodles and you can expect the same. And 10 winners will receive Annie Chun’s FREE product Coupons!

Please head over to Annie Chun’s and tell me one product you would most like to try! Simple! THIS GIVEAWAY IS OVER!

Come back here and leave me a comment and you will be entered! No extra entries as this is just a one day contest!

**Be sure to check out my other GIVEAWAYS click on the link above the banner, top left.**

Contest will conclude on 6/8 at 11:59pm EST. Winner will be drawn by random.org and validated per rules. US only.

Living Clay Company Review and Giveaway

June 8, 2009 by Karissa

I have always loved a good face mask. Even when i was a teenager and I didn’t break out like I do now. (yes you read that right, I was clear skinned teenager and now I break out like a wrestlers butt)

I have always had semi-sensitive skin on my face though, and I found that most masks (Queen Helenes at the drugstores) would make my face burn and itch. Now don’t get me wrong it is probably a really good mask, but i didn’t need theadded mint. So i decided to start mixing my own. the only problem is you have to let it sit for a few hours, to alkalize. well I am not best with being patient. Insert Living Clay. Living Clay® is an all natural calcium dominant Bentonite clay with Montmorillonite properties from the Smectite family of clays. Unlike other clays, Smectites are regarded for their exceptionally superior ability to both absorb and adsorb. Characterized by its expandable properties, Living Clay® is considered a green swelling clay recognized for its effectiveness in drawing out impurities and toxins.

Every piece of Bentonite clay retains a considerable amount of energy from the large and powerful magnetic entity of the Earth from the volcanic eruption – its negative ionic charge. This electromagnetic action transmits an extraordinary strength to the body’s cells and helps to rebuild vital potential through the liberation of latent energy. The body has great energy resources, which normally remain dormant; clay awakens them and speeds cellular revitalization. Living Clay® is a powerful agent of stimulation, transformation, detoxing and transmission of energy.

This rare, natural desert Bentonite clay, obtained from a sub-surface mine in California, has been protected from leaching by the climate. In addition, this particular clay deposit was sealed away and isolated from the natural elements by a cap of zeolite minerals for forty-three million years.

Because its adsorptive properties have not been compromised by air or ground water contaminants, this highly charged, all natural Calcium Bentonite clay has a drawing power of 33 times its molecular weight. Its extremely strong adsorptive and absorptive properties make it ideal for use in deep cleansing, detoxing, clarifying of the skin, facial masks, body wraps, and many other uses. It is milled to a 325 screen mesh to provide a smooth, creamy, less gritty texture.

There is truly so much information on Bentonite Clay and it’s beneficial properties. You can take it internally or use it as a mask, or as an main ingredient in soaps and lotions. (my shakes for my cleanse are made with Living Clays Bentonite!)

Living Clay sent me their Detox Clay Powder and I have been using this as an internal drink to help absorb toxins internally. You can also use it in a bath as a highly detoxification process.

I love their Cleansing Clay Mask. I know it alone has helped combat that horrible mess of breakouts I got from the unmentioned sunscreen on vacation! simply apply to a clean face and leave on for 15 minutes, rinse and pat dry, then apply your moisturizer. try mixing with yogurt or honey for really dry skin. Yes, even those of you with dry skin can use some exfoliation and detoxing!

I think my favorite product (if I have to pick one) is the their new Citrus Green Tea Body Cream. It is so full of moisture, but doesn’t leave you sticky and greasy. The scent is very light and yet extremely nice. No over powering of green tea of citrus, just a fresh clean scent. Their new Citrus Green Tea Cream is enhanced with antioxidants (ECGC – an antioxidant proven 200 times more powerful than Vitamin E), natural plant oils, and Living Clay. It is a wonderful all over body moisturizer. Even the mister loved it! Besides my Virgin Coconut Oil this was the only moisturizer I took with me to Florida! (and if you look at my bathroom vanity that is really saying something!)

I also tried their Fresh Mint Soap, made with their Living Clay as well, it is currently at a tie with Farmstead Organics Goat Milk Soap for my all time favorites!

Living Clay would like to offer Prissy Green Readers a chance to win a $40 Gift Certificate! You can choose what you would most like! To enter simply go to Living Clayor About Clay and tell me something you learned. No stealing from my post, or from other comments!

Yall know i am crazy about my vegetable garden. Well trying to be the economical gal I am I did some researching find a very inexpensive way to build your own composter. (we live in a pretty nice neighborhood and I am sure the HOA would have fit if we just a pile.)

Materials: Plastic or galvanized garbage can with lid, any size

Tools: Drill, ½ inch bit

Instructions: Drill about twelve (12) half inch holes in the lid and the sides of the can. This is for drainage and oxygen, even compost needs oxygen!

Place some woodchips on the bottom and even shredded newspaper, about 2-3 inches worth, this is for the extra moisture to drain into. Now add what you will! no pet waste and no meat or by products. Just make sure you aren’t adding too many of any one thing at a time!

This will be more attractive then most and also very pest resistant! This is the part I love! Instead of sticking your face in to mix it with a shovel or other tool, you simply slap that lid on and roll that puppy around! You also will want to place this on some small wooden pieces allowing the bottom to breath.

Here is a VERY informative list of what you can add: (urine supposedly acts as an accelorant. don’t worry you won’t find me crawling on top of ours and peeing, and I won’t share that fact with our friends when they come over either! eww.) If it is paper, make sure you shred it.
