Thrifty Thursday! Cabbage Rejuvelac, Make Your Own Probiotics!

Cabbage Rejuvelac – the best probiotic!

The easiest and least expensive way to plant healthy bacteria in the digestive tract is to take cabbage rejuvelac. Cabbage is a vegetable that is teeming with several healthy strains of lactobacteria, including lactobacillus.

Cabbage Rejuvelac Recipe

No starter is needed for making this recipe.

Ingredients: 3 cups of cabbage and 1 3/4 cups of water

  1. Use distilled water or prepare tap water; tap water contains chlorine which will interfere with the production of bacteria. Boil tap water for 30 minutes, uncovered, to remove chlorine, or leave out uncovered jars containing tap water for 24 hours so the chlorine will dissipate out of the water.
  2. Start by blending together 1 3/4 cups of distilled or purified water plus 3 cups of coarsely chopped, loosely packed fresh cabbage.
  3. Start the blender at a low speed and then advance the blender to high speed for 15 seconds or less. Do blend it too much. If the cabbage is too fine it will create a strong tasting rejuvelac.
  4. Pour the mixture into a wide-mouthed jar and allow 1 inch of space above the mixture.
  5. Screw the cover on tightly, and let stand it at room temperature for 3 days.
  6. After 3 days (72 hours) strain off the liquid rejuvelac, saving 1/4 cup for the next batch. The first batch of cabbage rejuvelac takes 3 days to mature, but succeeding batches only take one day (24 hours).

Each morning:

  1. Strain off the fresh rejuvelac liquid, but set aside 1/4 cup for the next batch. You will be drinking the rejuvelac liquid. You can discard the cabbage or use it to make kimchi.
  2. Blend together 1 1/2 cups (Note: this is 1/4 cup less than the first batch) of distilled or purified water plus 3 cups of coarsely ground, loosely packed fresh cabbage, and blend as in #2 above.
  3. Pour the mixture into a wide-mouthed jar which allows 1 inch of space above the mixture, and add 1/4 cup of the fresh rejuvelac just strained off.
  4. Screw the cover on tightly and shake well to mix the fresh rejuvelac into the mixture. Let it stand at room temperature until the next morning and repeat from Step a.

Cabbage rejuvelac can also be made without using a blender. Finely chop 2 1/2 cups of cabbage, instead of 1-3/4 cups, but use the same amount of water.

Good quality rejuvelac tastes similar to a cross between carbonated water and the whey obtained when making yogurt. Bad quality rejuvelac has a much more putrid odor and taste and should not be consumed.

Refrigerate rejuvelac if it is to be kept overnight. Discard any rejuvelac on hand 24 hours after it is poured off the cabbage.

Taking Rejuvelac: Drink each days rejuvelac liquid during the course of the day by taking 1/2 cup three times per day, preferably with meals.

Candida, do you have it?

May 6, 2009 by Karissa
Filed under Info You Want to Know

I have heard a lot about Candida and actually studied up on it a bit. But until recently I had no idea that this is most likely what is causing some of my symptoms.

Candida is a yeast that occurs naturally in the human body. Normally it lives in harmony with a variety of other microorganisms and actually performs a couple important functions. The problem occurs when something upsets the balance of bacteria in the body and this allows the yeast organism to proliferate and take over all the healthy microorganisms.

It normally resides in the intestinal tract, mouth, throat and genitals, however it can burrow holes in the intestinal tract, enter the blood stream and then make it’s way into any organ of the body. To make matters worse it emits over 70 different toxins into the body. Some people may even become allergic to the yeast itself.

These are two tests to see if you think you might have a Candida overgrowth:

For Adults or Children 12 Years & Older: Dr. William Crook’s Questionnaire.

For Children Under 12 Years: Yeast Questionnaire for Children’s Candida.

I think for me the scariest part of this horrible sickness is that all the symptoms were there, and even staring me in the face but no doctor saw it even when i gave them all my symptoms. Plus I am always in charge of my health and it has taken me a year to figure it out! This overgrowth is mainly caused by mainstream medications, including but NOT limited to: anti-biotics, especially if you have ever taken them for a long course, steroids, and birth control. I won’t bore you with all my symptoms but I was on anti-biotics for a long time (years) for acne, and I was off of them for a couple years then when i went back to them, all my symptoms started. I didn’t want to take them but I was out of options for my skin! now, never again! Just proof point if you can be natural, BE!

Symptoms:

  • Athletes’ foot.
  • Babies – colic, diaper rash and cradle cap.
  • Bruising easily.
  • Cheekbone or forehead tenderness, pain.
  • Cold hands or feet, low body temperature.
  • Cold-like symptoms – excessive mucus in the sinuses, nose, throat, bronchial tubes and lungs.
  • Cravings or addictions for sugar, bread or alcohol.

  • Glands — swollen, too little saliva (dryness in the mouth), blocked salivary glands, swollen lymph nodes.
  • Hair loss, scum on the scalp, itchy scalp, scalp sores and dryness.
  • Heart palpitations and irregular heart beat.

  • Feeling of swelling and tingling in the head.
  • Female health problems – infertility, vaginitis, unusual odors, endometriosis, cramps, menstrual irregularities, pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), discharge, painful intercourse, loss of sexual drive, redness or swelling of the vulva and surrounding area, vaginal itching, burning or redness, or persistent infections.
  • Fungal infections on the skin or nails.
  • Joint pain, stiffness or swelling (arthritis).
  • Kidney & bladder – infections, cystitis (inflammation of the bladder with possible infection), urinary frequency or urgency, low urine output, smelly urine, difficulty urinating, burning pain when urinating.
  • Lack of appetite.
  • Mind & Mood – anxiety attacks, crying spells, memory loss, feeling spaced out, depression (including suicidal feelings), manic feelings, inability to concentrate, mood swings, irritability, etc.
  • Mouth sores or blisters, canker sores, dryness, bad breath, a white coating on the tongue (thrush) and blocked salivary glands.
  • Muscle aches and pain, numbness, burning or tingling, and lack of strength and coordination.
  • Nasal congestion, postnasal drip, itching, dryness.
  • Odor of the feet, hair or body not relieved by washing.
  • Respiratory – cough, recurrent bronchitis or pneumonia, pain or tightness in the chest, wheezing, shortness of breath, asthma.
  • Sick all over feeling.

  • Stomach – heartburn, indigestion, belching, vomiting, burning, pains, needle-like pains, food seems to sit in the stomach like a lump, etc.
  • Sleep – insomnia, waking up frequently, nightmares, restless sleep, etc.
  • Sore throat, hoarse voice, constant tickle in the throat, laryngitis (loss of voice).

Many autoimmune diseases and other diseases, such as cancer have a candida connection. Whenever the immune system is severely depressed and cannot function normally it opens up the body to many diseases and malfunctions. Some, but not all, of these diseases are:

Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Celiac Disease/Gluten Sensitivity, Crohn’s Disease, Epstein-Barr Virus (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), Fibromyalgia (muscle pain & weakened), Thyroid Diseases, HIV/AIDS, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Myasthenia Gravis (a neuromuscular disease in which there is a failure of the nerves’ ability to stimulate and control the actions of certain muscles), Sjogren’s (a condition in which certain glands become inflamed, which interferes with the production of tears and saliva), Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cancer, and many others.

I used a lot of information here that I received from http://www.healingnaturallybybee.comHealing Natural By Bee. And if you suspect you have it, I really encourage you to use her website and learn more and cure yourself. There are medications you can take, BUT since medicine made you this way, it just seems wrong to me to do that. Mostly to cleanse yourself, you need to change your diet. you can eat meat and a lot of veggies but you have to cut almost all dairy and fruits as they all cause sugars in your system and candida thrives off sugar.

Coconut oil is a HUGE proponent to curing this obnoxious illness. I have been doing it for a few days but haven’t changed my diet completely yet and can already tell that I have some “die off” which is basically the symptoms of my body fighting the yeast that is being pulled from my system. (GROSS!)

There is so much more information that I could share with you here about this but I will let you use Bee’s site to find what you need to cure yourself. I am not going to put myself on the strict diet as I think I am healthy enough to do it 80% and be fine. I will be cutting all my high carbohydrate foods out and fruits for now, but I can’t deal with out my milk! I might switch to Kefir until I am sure I am uncontaminated. right now my main course of action is my massive amounts of Coconut Oil in my Vibrance Smoothies in the morning! (more on those later!) and I am also ordering Oil of Oregano!

Good luck!

Yoga4Dogs DVD ! Review and Giveaway

May 6, 2009 by Karissa

Hilarious! The dogs seems to think the Mister and I have lost our minds. First they are confused as to why we are in their space in the floor (sitting or standing) but then we snatch them up (gently of course!) and have them start doing some small posing and they know we have officially lost it.

Yoga 4 Dogs is a great way to share your workout with your dog. It features straight forward yoga poses that I really think just about anyone should be able to handle. While also incorporating your dog into the workout. The DVD features workouts for both small and big dogs, as well as a “Happy Paws Dog Massage” section. This is where the dogs officially forgave us for losing our marbles! It is really great to have your dogs part of the workout! Have you ever loved the exercises you learned from a workout DVD but couldn’t stand the host? You will have no problems with Amy Stevens! She is fantastic! Really explains it all very well and also has a calming voice, which is great for yoga!

You can purchase the DVD right from the website for $19.99. Amy donates $1 of each purchase to your choice of the ASPCA or Wildlife Alliance. I have to admit this is better Yoga then the Wii! HA! far better!

So would you like a chance to win the Yoga 4 Dogs DVD for you and your Canine buddy at home? Just tell me if you have ever tried Yoga before or not! Easy peasy!

Max Green Alchemy Review and Giveaway

About Max Green Alchemy
The skin is the largest often yet under-appreciated organ of the human body. It is adorned with cosmetics, cleaned with abrasives and detergents, soothed with creams, lotions and ointments, and exposed to sunburn and environmental pollutants. Beyond protection, skin can also absorb whatever comes in contact with it – a fact recognized by drug companies who provide highly effective patch products that deliver medication directly into the blood bypassing the digestive system and its ability to remove toxins. It should be no surprise that the myriad of ingredients found in personal care products are also absorbed directly into the blood stream. In fact recent research indicates that the average level of toxins within the bodies of individuals has been steadily rising for some time. Some argue that this “body burden” correlates to the rise in chemical sensitivity, allergies, chronic fatigue and even cancers.

Max Green Alchemy is passionate about products that respect consumers’ internal and external environments without sacrificing effectiveness and which adhere to the comprehensive international standards for cruelty-free cosmetics. All products carry the PETA cruelty-free and vegan endorsement, plus the Vegan.org and LeapingBunny.org certifications.

Scalp Rescue Conditioner
The perfect complement to Scalp Rescue Shampoo – it’s formulated for improving dry, itchy, sensitive, scaly, flaky or dehydrated scalps by strengthening the hair and nourishing the scalp. It has a fresh non-medicated aroma from healing essential oils of Tea Tree, Lemon Tea Tree, Lavender, Rosemary and Geranium.

Unique Product Characteristics
• No Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, parabens or petrochemicals
• Safe for color treated hair
• Supports the treatment of psoriasis of the scalp, seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff
• Vitamin enriched (B5, C ester and E).
• Washes out easily leaving the hair feeling great

Did you notice that little sign above the conditioner? Voted best by ELLE magazine’s Green Stars competition. This annual event, with a panel of 24 makeup, skin and hair pros, picks the freshest finds from among thousands of eco friendly products. How sweet is that? Makes me saying how much i love it seem like small peas!

I tried out both the Scalp Rescue Shampoo and Conditioner, and I have to say, out of those that I have reviewed here so far, and well, heck out of any shampoo and conditioner I have used this is by far my favorite! it leaves my hair silky and shiny and not weighed down by conditioners, it is repairing my hair, not just leaving “product” on each strand. My hair feels fuller and yet lighter.
The shampoo even won the 2008 Proggy Award for best Cruelty-Free Shampoo!

Did you see it is also safe for those that color their hair? I wouldn’t just try it if I was having scalp problems, if your hair has stopped growing or you just need a shine boost or if you hair needs some TLC I think this is your go to duo!

Max Green Alchemy, carries skin care which includes items for facial care and lip care and care for your feet too!

Max Green Alchemy has offered up a bottle of each their Scalp Rescue Shampoo and Conditioner to one Prissy Green reader! Just head over to Max Green Alchemy and tell me one other product you would like to try out!

“We checked on that, too. The FDA says it’s up to the cosmetic firms to regulate themselves. The FDA says it doesn’t approve makeup before it hits the market. Only when an ingredient is proven to be harmful, can the FDA take action.

Leading Natural Personal Care Brand in North America Calls for Certification Standards and Enforcement to Solve Problem of Mislabeled “Organic” Products

WASHINGTON, DC – On Tuesday, May 5, President of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, David Bronner will deliver comments to the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) meeting in support of the recommendation set forth by the NOSB’s Certification, Accreditation and Compliance Committee. David Bronner’s comments “Solving the Problem of Mislabeled Organic Cosmetics and Personal Care Products,” are available online http://drbronner.com/usda_organic_body_care.html.

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps manufactures and sells personal care and cosmetics products including North America’s top-selling natural brand of liquid and bar soap.. The company also manufactures and sells lotions, hair rinses, shaving gels and balms. All Dr. Bronner’s soap and personal care products are labeled as “Made with Organic Oils” or outright as “Organic”, and that labeling complies with the National Organic Program (NOP) criteria for labeling a product as such. All main cleansing and moisturizing ingredients are derived from organic agriculture, grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. By contrast, many so-called “Organic” personal care products and brands in the market today, include only organic herbal infusions for an organic veneer, but the main cleansing and moisturizing ingredients are not made from certified organic material, but rather conventional agricultural and petrochemical material.

In his submitted comments to the NOSB, David Bronner wrote, “Dr. Bronner’s, working with the Organic Consumers Association and other companies dedicated to the truthful labeling of organic personal care products has been in the vanguard of efforts to prevent the deception of consumers through misleading labeling of cosmetic/personal care products using the term “Organic.” Unfortunately, such misleading labeling has become a significant problem, because USDA has not made the National Organic Program standards mandatory for the labeling of personal care products…The current regulatory regime fails to protect consumers from misleading and deceptive labeling as “Organic” because compliance with the National Organic Program is voluntary,” explains Bronner. “Dr. Bronner’s strongly believes that the best and most effective way to protect consumers of organic personal care products is for the USDA to re-interpret the scope of it’s own authority and to make the National Organic Program (NOP) standards mandatory.”

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps strongly supports the recommendation set forth by the NOSB’s Certification, Accreditation and Compliance Committee (CCAC), to make the NOP standards mandatory for cosmetic/personal care products by including that class of products in relevant NOP regulations. Dr. Bronner’s believes that only by making the NOP rules mandatory can consumers be adequately protected from the misleading deceptive practices currently prevalent in the marketplace.

Go Dr. B! Of course this is the originals son taking the plight but it is due time that companies had to stand for what is actually in their products. Do not buy anything if it says organic but does not have the organic seal, unless you trust the company. there are no Organic standards (yet) for personal and bath care items, so these companies are held to stringent food standards, and therefore deserve that seal!

incognito for Hawaii and Across the Pond!

May 5, 2009 by Karissa
Filed under Info You Want to Know

I know most of my readers aren’t in Hawaii nor are they European but maybe if you are traveling this summer?

Loved by health-conscious stars, now incognito 100% natural, ethically produced anti-insect camouflage spray is coming to a select number of Holland & Barrett stores countrywide, giving the nation much-needed effective, natural camouflage against insects from mosquitoes and fleas, wasps, bees, ticks and even cockroaches.

This timely availability coincides with unprecedented levels of mosquitoes in Europe as well as world-wide due to the shift in climate this year. incognito is in fact the only anti-insect product which covers all manner of creepy crawlies, including ticks which can carry Lyme disease, which can be fatal, and which are also predicted to be out in force in the British woodlands and countryside this summer.

The incognito range of products include the signature spray, loofah soap, anti-insect after-sun moisturiser and citronella sticks, and they are all gentle enough for the most sensitive skins including newborn babies, yet powerful enough for use even in the deepest tropics.

From mid-May the products will be on sale at almost 200 branches of high street health food shop Holland & Barrett; with several in London including Camden, Kensington, Chelsea and the City, as well as key branches in Oxford, Derby, Edinburgh, Southampton, Bath, Chester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Bluewater, Leeds, York, Inverness, Chichester and Tunbridge Wells. The spray has been rigorously tested by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and retails at £8.99.

Already popular both in the UK and abroad, including recently in the Republic of Ireland, Thailand, Hawaii and the Caribbean, the fresh, pleasant smelling incognito products use a secret blend of 100% natural ingredients, all containing an organically certified citronella only found on the volcanic island of Java, which is more effective against insects than ordinary citronella found elsewhere.

incognito works by masking human kairomones (similar to pheromones), camouflaging the wearer so they remain incognito – unrecognisable – to insects without the unwanted negative side effects and health risks linked to chemical repellents such as DEET.

As well as smelling decidedly better than chemical-based repellents, incognito camouflage products are ideal for adults and children with sensitive skins or skin conditions, as well as avoiding the ingestion of potentially harmful ingredients.

Recent rave reviews for the incognito spray includes Simon Heptinstall of The Travel Editor who rigorously tested it: “I sat in the cat flea armchair. This is a harsh test for any anti-bite claimant as you normally get bitten by one of the cats’ little friends within a second or so. Well, I’m still sitting in it writing this on my knee. No bites and I’d forgotten how comfy this chair is…”

Celebrities who use the products on all their travels include Davina McCall, “it’s brilliant”, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman.

Incognito is also sold direct through their website www.lessmosquito.com

What makes goat milk so special? Well, I am glad you asked… Goat milk is a complex, living food that contains a variety of vitamins and minerals, along with beneficial lactic acid. Not only is it a super food, but this combination makes for a unique, skin softening ingredient like no other. Goat milk has been used as a beauty agent for thousands of years and for good reason. Nothing compares to its gentle composition. It is wonderful for babies, children, and adults with the most delicate skin. Our goats are raised naturally and given no antibiotics or hormones. They are fed a grass based diet with lots of green, aromatic hay and herbs. I was able to test out a variety of products from Farmhouse Organics but I have to be honest, I have no idea which soap I tried. I told the Mister to use it next and he did, and with that he threw the wrapper and all away! But that is not the important part, the important part is that he loved it! He is always kinda like, “it’s good.” but this time he actually used the words lather and creamy. I loved it! It really is a delicious creamy lather and leaves your skin feeling nourished and not squeaky clean, just silky smooth!
