Mother Tongues Review and Giveaway
Today is World Fair Trade Day! and I wanted to feature a special company that has a very unique idea and statement to bring to everyone! Mother Tongues!
World Fair Trade Day is an international celebration of Fair Trade, with events taking place in over 80 countries. In the U.S., our theme is “Everything Is Better When It’s Fairâ€. The lives of producers and consumers are better because of Fair Trade. When we support Fair Trade, we not only support the people who make the items we consume and enjoy, we also support the environment, women’s rights, children’s rights, cultural dignity and peace building. That’s a powerful thing to do by choosing to buy Fair Trade products.
Michelle Hamman, owner and creator of Mother Tongues, has this to say about her company and
why she created it!
I live between my mother tongue, Afrikaans, and American English. As someone born and raised in South Africa, I brought to the United States values of community and being that are very different from North American culture. Fourteen years after leaving South Africa, however, I am more convinced than ever that one culture can educate another. And so MotherTongues, our small T-shirt company, was born.
We (my husband is my big inspiration and motivator) started with words known to us that can’t be directly translated into English. We printed these words on T-shirts and defined the words in a poetic description on the back of the shirt. The first T-shirt we did was “ubuntu,†a Zulu or Xhosa word from South Africa. Ubuntu is a term for humaneness, for caring, sharing and being in harmony with all of creation.
- MotherTongues donates $1 of every t-shirt, apron or tote bag sold (retail and wholesale) to the Center for Women in Transition. This amazing organization helps women and children deal with significant life challenges (domestic violence, sexual assault, homelessness, etc.) Their website: APlaceForWomen.org
- The MotherTongues mission: MotherTongues wants to celebrate cultures by explaining unique words that encourage positive personal and communal traits.
MotherTongues also carries more then just T-shirts! She carries aprons, keychains, gift bags, socks and tote bags! All of course with the highly inspirational words on them.
Michelle sent me their gorgeous Zen Tee to check out. I am typing in it right now! Zen comes from Japan and is their word for meditation. I love the saying on the back, Just Be, Be Just. i love the natural color as well, I have had a few “natural” colored shirts that just looked dingy, this is almost cream. It nice and crisp in color.
Michelle has very graciously given me one $50 gift Certificate to hand on over to one Prissy Green reader as well as a pair of socks to two more winners! To win you must go to MotherTongues and pick your favorite word and come back here and leave it in the comments. You must do this to enter.
(these are different so look closely!)
